Can Contextual Targeting Step In for IDFA in Mobile Gaming?
Tim Cross 26 May, 2021
On the open web, contextual targeting has been touted as a potential stand-in for behavioural targeting, as the latter becomes more difficult to do due to the loss of third-party cookies.
So the most important services will continue to be subscription-based, and the others will be forced to move to an ad-supported model. Rakuten is an example of that, they were one of the first to move to an ad-supported model.

WhatsApp's new update to its privacy policy and terms of service hasn't gone down well with users , several of whom are now looking for better alternatives to switch to. Last week, the instant messaging giant had launched a new privacy policy stating that it will be sharing user data with parent company Facebook, and those who do not accept the updated terms by February 8, will no longer have the access to their chats.
This notification, which users across India started receiving early last week, threw people, tech experts, and cybersecurity advocates into a frenzy. Several multinational companies also started advising their employees to avoid disclosing or sharing sensitive company-related data or information on WhatsApp. These companies warned their staff against making crucial business calls on the messaging platform.
Viber
This is yet another instant messaging app that supports end-to-end encryption. Your messages, videos, photos, video and voice calls are protected. It is a cross-platform operated by Japanese firm MNC Rakuten, that lets you back-up your data from the app to your drive.
Just like Telegram, Viber, too, offers the disappearing messages feature. You can set a particular time and your text will disappear on its own. It also offers a ‘screenshot lock’ feature, similar to that of Signal. Viber can be accessed on iOS, Android and Windows.
How safe is your data with Viber?
Although Viber is a free app, you might see a few ads on the messaging platform. However, the company in a blog post clarified that the ads only help them keep the app free for all to use and no user data is actually shared with the advertising providers.
The messaging platform collects your device ID identifiers, location, phone number and user ID, in addition to product interaction, email ID, name and contacts.

The U.S. government has upended the $35 billion-a-year cellular-equipment industry, ushering in a new era of competition and giving U.S. companies a shot at re-entering a sector they vacated years ago.
And to take advantage of that opening, the U.S. government -- as well as governments in the U.K. and European Union -- are considering financial support and other measures to boost domestic cellular-equipment makers trying to crack the three incumbents' stranglehold on the market.
The U.S. government is a major backer of the open-software efforts, which officials say could boost both U.S. national security and business. It potentially can help U.S. businesses by creating openings for new players, and because these new efforts rely less on hardware (where the U.S. has fallen behind) and more on software (where companies such as Microsoft Corp. and International Business Machines Corp. can potentially play a role).
"We may be able to increase security, reduce our exposure to any single foreign vendor, lower costs and push the equipment market to where the United States is uniquely skilled -- in software," Federal Communications Commission Acting Chairwoman Jessica Rosenworcel said in March.
President Biden and Japanese Prime Minister Suga Yoshihide last month agreed that the U.S. and Japan would collaborate to advance open 5G networks "by fostering innovation and by promoting trustworthy vendors and diverse markets," the White House said.
Several smaller U.S. companies -- such as Airspan Networks, Altiostar, Mavenir, JMA and Parallel Wireless -- are focused on 5G equipment using open software.

"Offene RAN-basierte 5G-Bereitstellungen

Bottom line: Rakuten is a solid free app with great rewards for both in-person and online shopping at over 2,500 retailers.
What is Rakuten and how does it work?
Rakuten is an easy-to-use app that can help you earn cash back on everyday purchases. Each retailer sets its own cash back amounts. You can expect to earn at least 1%, but it's not unheard of to earn upwards of 8% or 10%. The app will also show you special dates with even higher cash back earnings at eligible retailers. Formerly known as Ebates, Rakuten has more retail partners than other cash back apps, making it a cash back enthusiast favorite.
If you also use a rewards credit card, you can maximize your earning potential as you'll earn rewards in both ways.
Download the app and sign up for an account to get started. You can also install the Rakuten browser extension to shop from your computer. You'll see offers from each partner store, usually as a cash back percentage. Rakuten works with over 2,500 stores, but you'll need to activate available offers before you can use them.
Here's how it works:
• Activate the offer before you shop, whether online or in-store.
• Shop online and your cash back will be credited to your Rakuten account.
• To earn rewards when you shop in-store, first link your credit or debit cards to your Rakuten account. This is how your purchases are tracked.
• It may take a few days for earnings to appear in your account.
• Cash back is paid out quarterly by check or via PayPal.
You may be wondering how this cash back app works. Rakuten is an affiliate marketing company, so it receives a commission from each order made through its retail partners. Rakuten then splits that commission with you.

The cost of building out a new mobile operation from scratch was all too evident in Rakuten Mobile’s first quarter results, but the company is unconcerned.
Japan’s newest mobile operator just turned one year old and marked the occasion by reporting a 94.1 billion yen (US$860 million) operating loss for the first quarter of 2021, almost three times the loss it posted in the year-ago quarter and more than 20 yen greater than its loss in Q4. The figures refer to its core mobile business; its overall mobile loss was slightly greater.
But speaking in a pre-recorded interview with Credit Suisse, Mikitani made it clear that the problem is short term.
There are two sides to Rakuten Mobile’s business, he reminded us: the Japanese mobile operations and the company’s role as an exporter of its mobile platform. “When both of these businesses are in full swing we will be capable of driving tremendous profitability,” he said.

Rakuten’s online brokerage service recently announced it has reached six million general securities accounts — only five months after surpassing five million accounts in December 2020. In fact, growth has only continued to accelerate in recent years: Rakuten Securities now ranks second*1 in Japan’s brokerage industry in terms of number of accounts as of the end of March 2021.

Rakuten Travel gains market share amid challenging year
“The pandemic has had a profound impact on the travel industry,” Yoshiyuki Takano, Managing Director of Rakuten’s Travel & Mobility Business, commented in his keynote presentation at the annual conference. “I am deeply moved by the efforts of accommodation providers to manage the situation and offer countermeasures. We will work even harder to link these efforts to attract customers.”
Those efforts appear to be having a positive impact on Rakuten’s business. Data suggests that Rakuten Travel managed to navigate the rough seas of 2020 far better than the travel industry as a whole (see table below). Rakuten Travel also reached a significant milestone in 2020 by earning a 20% market share in domestic bookings, double the 10% share it owned in 2015.
The power of the Rakuten Ecosystem
One of Rakuten’s most unique features is its expansive ecosystem of services, which are tied together through the Rakuten Points loyalty program. Points can be earned and redeemed across many of Rakuten’s 70+ services in Japan, which helps drive loyalty among Rakuten members, while encouraging them to try other Rakuten services.
“Despite the changes brought on by the pandemic, Rakuten’s businesses have continued to expand,” Takano explained before highlighting the growth of Rakuten’s core pillars of e-commerce, fintech and mobile, and the role of the Rakuten Ecosystem in Rakuten Travel’s success — cross-use. “89% of Rakuten Travel users are also using other Rakuten services.”
