How Far We’ve Come: Marking One Year of FCC Approval
Tomorrow will mark one year since we received unanimous, bipartisan FCC approval of our license modification application. After years of thorough technical analysis and engagement with industry stakeholders and policymakers, the FCC determined that deploying a terrestrial wireless network in the L-band would advance our country’s economic and security interests and help the U.S. transition to next-generation networks.
Twelve months later, we’ve made a great deal of progress toward this vision – one that is not ours alone, but a shared goal with leaders in Washington to invest in our nation’s infrastructure, modernize our digital supply chain, and lead in 5G.
The investment of time and resources we’ve made in pursuit of this common goal has been significant – and it’s also been worthwhile. First, we took the same step every operator takes when new spectrum bands are approved for use: We went to 3GPP, the wireless industry standards body, to begin the process to standardize our spectrum and partner with vendors to commercialize the L-Band ecosystem.
Next, we’ve advanced our vision for a 5G solution for critical infrastructure companies. In particular, we’ve been collaborating with Rakuten Mobile, an industry leader that’s pioneering use of O-RAN technology, to build a commercial blueprint for 5G Mobile Private Networks. We look forward to commencing trials with them later this year.
And of course, we’ve continued to work hard in the lab. Earlier this month, we reached a major milestone of successfully completing a 5G over-the-air call on our test network – a validation that our spectrum and planned network architecture are well-suited for next-generation applications.

Samsung Electronics and Rakuten TV are strengthening their collaboration with one common goal in mind: to deliver more content to Samsung TV Plus users across multiple European markets beginning this month.
Rakuten TV has announced that it is expanding the service on Samsung TV Plus to include 166 new channels in 16 markets across Europe. The new channels are planned to roll out this month and throughout May.

Japanese mobile newcomer Rakuten Mobile made a huge step towards levelling the playing field with rivals, detailing plans to begin adding Apple’s iPhone 12 line-up to its range from the end of the month.
CMO Naho Kono (pictured) told the media the company will offer the “most reasonably priced” iPhones in the country as part of its Unlimit VI plan, with flexible data options.
Rakuten Mobile will start accepting orders online and at retail outlets tomorrow (23 April) and also plans to soon offer all iPhone models running iOS 14.4 and later.
Marc Einstein, chief analyst at Japan-based research company ITR, told Mobile World Live carrying the iPhone 12 is a positive development for Rakuten Mobile, as not offering the most popular smartphone model in Japan was a large barrier to growth.

The Japanese greenfield operator Rakuten Mobile has seen its low-price strategy driving fast subscriber growth, so it has decided to double down on its iPhone 12 offers. The main selling point is the carrier positions itself to offer the lowest price iPhones among the four operators.
The operator believes this new tariff plan has been a catalyst to the near doubling of its subscriber numbers (which the company insists on calling “applications”) within the past three months, from 2.2 million in January to 3.9 million by the beginning of April. This takes its total number of the subscribers to 4.5 million (including 600,000 on its MVNO network), as was shared at the press conference.
This Un-limited VI plan will now also apply on the new iPhones. Combining phone price with monthly tariff, Rakuten customers choosing to pay monthly instalments for the device (instead of the one-off payment upfront) could expect to pay between JPY9,182 ($85) a month if they should choose the top model (iPhone 12 Pro Max) on a 24-month payback scheme with an unlimited data plan, and JPY1,149 ($11) if going for the entry model (iPhone SE) on a 48-month payback scheme and less than 1GB monthly data package.
This almost sounds like a non-news, as the latest iPhone line-up has been in the market for half a year. But in Japan, a market where operator channel is still dominant, being ranged by operators is still a significant plus for product sales. Also included in the range are the newly announced purple colour iPhone 12 and the tracking device AirTag.

Rakuten's Tareq Amin: Battling legacy thinking and network complexity
4/22/2021
This is the service provider keynote featuring a conversation between Gabriel Brown, principal analyst for mobile networks and 5G at Heavy Reading, and Tareq Amin, group chief technology officer at Rakuten Mobile. The interview was streamed to an audience of thousands on April 8, during the Open RAN World Digital Conference.
During the interview, Amin discussed his ambition to build a new kind of wireless network in Tokyo and, eventually, all of Japan. He noted that the company is very happy with what they've achieved so far but doesn't shy away from the fact that "this has really, really been a complex path, to go create a new foundation for a new connectivity architecture that, frankly speaking, doesn't currently exist at this scale," Amin said.
Complexity aside, the more flexible network has allowed Rakuten to keep prices low and "we think that consumers have enormously benefited from the disruption that this technology and from the business model that Rakuten has done," he said. "I cannot imagine having this level of flexibility had we built the network on what I would consider to be a legacy platform architecture that's driven by hardware..."

Shoppable
Shoppable is a patented, distributed checkout API that removes the need to redirect consumers to external websites to complete purchases. Shoppable has several clients and content creators licensing their checkout technology to power ecommerce on branded websites, in content and digital campaigns like Instagram’s checkout.
Shoppable brings the cart to the consumer throughout their purchase journey. Consumers love this because Shoppable reduces the number of clicks needed to checkout. Shoppable seamlessly brings commerce to content and digital media, aiding in converting the shopper upon discovery.
Unlike other affiliates, Shoppable sends orders via a checkout/cart API versus a link-off. The transaction is processed on the brand’s backend, and the brand will collect the data as the merchant of record. There are no restrictions, but checkout/cart API is required to send orders to the advertiser.
Shoppable is Looking to work with CPG, Pets, Beauty, Home, and Clothing/Apparel.
Envolve Tech
Envolve Tech’s A.I.-powered Virtual Shopping Assistant identifies and converts sales opportunities in customer chat channels. Their technology helps convert 20% of online chats into sales with little to no impact on customer service resources. They are a performance marketing channel that increases on-site conversions and average order value while reducing re-marketing costs.
Customers always have questions while shopping online. Envolve Tech satisfies their needs for information at the point of sale, deepening customer engagement and conversion. Plus, integration could not be easier. If you’re already set up with Rakuten Advertising’s container tag, it’s simply a case of Envolve Tech sharing their script to deploy. Note: advertisers are required to provide Envolve Tech with their content feed, and they currently only work with English-speaking websites; however, they do not work with merchants requiring specific compliance regulations, such as lending and gambling sites. There are no setup fees, no contracts, and no monthly subscriptions.
Envolve Tech takes standard network commission for every sale generated. The advertiser sets these commission rates, so everything is tracked within the network for complete transparency. Envolve Tech is for advertisers looking for a turnkey chat solution to increase on-site revenue through A.I.

And if the growth predicted in its Open RAN and vRAN addressable markets and stakeholders report is realised, ABI Research has calculated that total spending on O-RAN RUs for the public outdoor macro cell network will reach $69.5bn by 2030, with cumulative unit shipments expected to reach 15.7 million.
At the same time, the total revenue of O-RAN RUs for the enterprise indoor small cell network could reach $39.8bn in 2030, with cumulative unit shipments expected to hit 205.5 million.
“The key benefits of O-RAN bring multi-vendor interoperability for innovations and reduce time to market for deploying new network functionality,” said Jiancao Hou, 5G and mobile network infrastructure senior analyst at ABI Research. “Powered by network virtualisation, O-RAN will help network operators and various industrial enterprise verticals enable network automation and intelligent radio resource control, therefore reducing network integration expenses and operational complexity.
