Rakuten Viber don’t want to sell the users

How a simple need for free communication turned into a messaging giant

By JOY LUMAWIG-BUENSALIDO
JANUARY 18, 2021

Considering that 2020 was a very challenging year, Viber as a communications company, experienced tremendous growth in all its services, from calls to chats to messaging. Not only person to person, but families, students and more individuals benefitted from the growing messaging service.

How does Viber earn?

WHILE most global companies largely rely on advertising income, Viber’s budget does not depend on advertising alone. Its revenue sources are diversified. Viber revenues depend on building more and more tools to get more and more data. Subsequently, it will mean more advertising revenues.

“We built our own model, which is very different from Facebook which is advertising 100 percent,” Agaoua explains. “ We do some advertising, which is less than 20 percent of our revenue and it will never be more than 20 percent of our revenue.

Viber has proven that it’s feasible to earn a profit without selling our users’ data

Not wanting to exploit their users for profit, Viber thought about how to be more creative in thinking of ways to earn money. “Throughout the years, Viber has proven that it’s feasible to earn a profit without selling our users’ data,” Agaoua discloses. “We make a profit through our well-thought-out brand partnerships and other strategic business solutions that help improve the lives of our users—all without requiring us to put our users at any risk.”

Although Viber aims to be an all-in-one app that has features that can help its users with their everyday lives, the company doesn’t wish to monopolize the market. That way, Viber can consistently put up with new technology that keeps on coming into the business and communications market.
“We don’t want to do it all,” Agaoua insists. “Instead, we’d rather partner with brands or companies that are already doing a good job. In the end, Viber’s core service is to provide users a secure communication platform where they can have private conversations or exchange thoughts and ideas with family, friends, officemates and even small businesses and brands they love without the fear of being tracked or spied on.”

As Viber looks forward to the next 10 years and beyond, Agaoua keeps the faith the company will be an even better communication tool used by more global users who continue to rely on Viber as part of their daily lives.

Rakuten has almost 22 million credit card users and wants to reach a position where it has more mobile users than credit card holders

Hiroshi Mikitani, Chairman and CEO of Japanese e-commerce group Rakuten, has said that the company will forge ahead with its fledgling mobile telecommunications venture despite posting a ‘record loss’ as a result of heavy investment costs in Rakuten Mobile. The Nikkei reports that the e-commerce firm booked a net loss of JPY114.2 billion (USD1.1 billion) in FY20, up from a loss of JPY31.9 billion in the previous year and worse than analysts’ forecasts of JPY94.5 billion (according to S&P Capital IQ). The group’s revenue increased 15% year-on-year to an all-time high of JPY1.46 trillion aided by strong performances from its e-commerce and financial services units, but Rakuten Mobile – which entered the domestic market in April 2020 – reported a massive USD2.1 billion loss, wiping out the group’s other profits in the process. Rakuten expects losses from the nascent wireless carrier to widen in fiscal 2021 before ‘decreasing next year’, and in an online conference Mikitani bullishly proclaimed ‘we have no intention to stay in the number four position’ adding that the company has almost 22 million credit card users and wants to reach a position where it has more mobile users than credit card holders.

April 2021

Rakuten Viki Bows North American SVOD Platform, Adds Asian Movie Sales

ERIK GRUENWEDEL
March 22, 2021

Rakuten Viki, an SVOD platform featuring Asian content, March 22 announced it is introducing a new transactional video-on-demand movie rental service for the North American market. The TVOD platform affords subscribers earlier access to new movie releases, and is available via desktop browser, Roku, Amazon Firestick, Apple TV+, Android TV, Chromecast, and on mobile devices.

The $4.99/$9.99 SVOD platform is launching in the U.S. with the debut of two Korean films: Josée as an exclusive and New Year Blues, which released in December and February respectively.

“With the launch of TVOD, viewers can quickly and easily access films … that they can then watch anytime, anywhere and at their own convenience,” Sarah Kim, SVP of content and partnerships, said in a statement. “It’s also a way to watch in-demand, exclusive content that isn’t too hard on the wallet.”
TVOD is the latest service addition to Rakuten Viki, which showcases a vast collection of more than 1,700 TV shows and movies from Korea, Japan, mainland China, Taiwan and Thailand that are accessible for free or through a subscription.

Rakuten Viki’s library includes a myriad of movies, romantic comedies, K-dramas and variety shows both current and catalog, with many available the day after they air in their origin country.

Rakuten Card Linked Offers Network in the U.S./Canada

POSTED MAR 31, 2021

Consumers in the U.S. and Canada with American Express, Mastercard and Visa credit and debit cards can link them to the Rakuten Card Linked Offers Network to receive cash-back offers, airline miles, points and other loyalty currencies from large retailers. The merchant-funded offers are made available to consumers through card issuers, mobile wallet providers and other loyalty program operators including Citi, Mastercard, United Airlines, American Airlines, Alaska Airlines and Google Pay.
Rakuten, which is a U.S.-based subsidiary of the online retailer and payment card issuer in Japan, entered the card-linked rewards industry with the 2014 acquisition of Ebates Performance Marketing.
The company provides its large merchant customers with pay-per-performance metrics that substantiate the advertising dollars they aim at generating online and in-store sales as well as for dining. Those metrics include assuring merchants that they never pay twice for the same card-linked offer and all purchases can be demonstrated to have been initiated via the Rakuten platform.
Currently, more than six million cards are active in Rakuten’s platform, which mostly operates on a white-label basis. Some business is conducted on a direct-to-consumer basis through Rakuten Rewards, which is mobile app based.

Card issuers with more than one million accounts are Rakuten’s focus, although the company will also do business with smaller issuers through their card account processors.
Rakuten’s turnkey service to card issuers, which includes handling all back-end reconciliation with the merchants and fraud protection on all transactions, is driven by API links. All primary account numbers registered with Rakuten are tokenized. The company, which is PCI Level 1 certified, does not hold any personally identifiable information on its servers.

Rakuten will expand to the U.K. by year-end.

https://www.zeit.de/wirtschaft/unternehmen/...ba-strafe-monopol-recht

Rakuten Mobile attracts over 3.9 million applications for its mobile offering

By Juan Pedro Tomás on APRIL 9, 2021

Japanese carrier Rakuten Mobile said it attracted over 3.9 million applications for its mobile service since it launched its 4G offering one year ago.

The telco launched a new promotional campaign to attract more subscribers. This campaign offers the Rakuten UN-LIMIT VI service plan to customers free of charge for the first three months of service.

The total number of Rakuten Mobile contracts, including MVNO contracts, has now reached 4.5 million.

“Since full-scale commercial launch of its mobile service in April 2020, Rakuten Mobile has carried out various measures to improve the quality of its service, including upgrading the service plan, expanding its network area, and increasing the number of Rakuten Mobile shops and lineup of original devices and products compatible with its network,” the telco said in a release.

Rakuten Mobile had deployed over 11,500 base stations for a population coverage of 73.5%. The Japanese operator aims to increase this coverage to 96% by the middle of the year.

In September 2020, Rakuten Mobile launched 5G services in parts of Tokyo, Kanagawa, Saitama, Hokkaido, Osaka and Hyogo. The service is being initially offered via Non-Stand Alone (NSA) 5G architecture.

Rakuten Mobile’s President Yoshihisa Yamada had previously said that the operator was expecting the 5G to be available in Japan’s all 47 prefectures by end-March 2021.

Yamada had also said that Rakuten Mobile expected to launch a Stand-Alone 5G network in the second quarter of 2021.

Rakuten’s platform contains all the elements of the Rakuten Mobile network, including telco applications and software from multiple vendors, OSS and BSS systems handling customer billing and activation systems, in addition to edge computing and virtual network management functions.

RCP is aimed at offering solutions and services for the deployment of virtualized networks at speed and low cost by telecom companies, enterprises and governments around the world, the telco said.
