Rakuten is Leveraging O-RAN to Reimagine Mobile and it Could Change the Way We Use Our Phones Forever

MILAN MILANOVIĆ 16 Nov 2020OV 2020

As a brand new entrant in the Japanese mobile space, Rakuten took its cloud-centric approach and virtualized everything from radio to the core with hundreds of virtual functions implemented. These functions are delivered from multiple computing centers leveraging COTS hardware.

Rakuten has also fostered innovation on the radio access side by having infrastructure giants like Nokia agree to open up the radio, which is typically a black box. This allows Rakuten to control all the hardware that goes into the network, the supply chain, the ecosystem as well as the security aspect of this platform. Rakuten prides itself in the “zero touch provisioning” which breaks free from traditional network rollouts, drastically speeds up the deployment process and requirements, and redefines the way telecom operators can architect, provision and deploy the network.

A company like Rakuten — with decades of experience running server-centric IP-based services — already has an advantage over traditional telcos because of the hundreds of edge data centers they operate. At this time, Rakuten has an infrastructure of nearly 300 edge data centers that can bring content geographically closer to the user and drastically reduce latency. The CP workloads are handled by central data servers, and the entire operation is managed by the horizontal cloud. Everything from radio access, transport and network functions are virtualized and orchestrated by the Rakuten Mobile operating system.

The Rakuten model is a very early dive into the world of O-RAN architecture. It went from a proof-of-concept to a fully fledged commercial mobile network serving millions of customers in what felt like the blink of an eye. There are still many unknowns, in particular in terms of future scalability and security, but the operator seems to be very confident with its own Rakuten Mobile Platform (RMP). In fact, that same platform is being offered as a turn-key solution to existing mobile operators and new entrants.

This model promises a significant cost reduction in both capital and operating expense, including head count (due to the data-centric nature and the level of automation). This approach seems to pose a threat to the traditional telecom giants like Ericsson, Nokia and Huawei in terms of revenue. However, these companies’ willingness to open their radio components and allow customization for Rakuten’s specific needs implies that broader change is coming in the telecom world.

This new architecture will have a significant impact on the telecom industry.

First, it will allow new entrants to disrupt the market. Telecom operators will be able to pick and choose different software components for these virtualized networks.

Ultimately, this will make networks more flexible and secure, since they won't have a single supplier.
Second, a virtualized open radio access architecture will support faster software innovation and more flexibility.

This will give rise to advanced features like network automation, self-optimization of radio resources, coordination of radio access nodes, exposure to third-party multi-access edge computing (MEC) applications through open application programming interfaces (APIs), and integration with virtualized core and transport networks.

Third, open RAN will also be useful for coverage in hard to reach rural locations – such as an area with a very small population – or where a sharing model is more cost-effective, such as dense urban locations where large numbers of small cells are required.

Telefónica has been an early adopter and is playing a very active role in open networks.

We also bought a stake in Altiostar, a company that provides RAN software solutions that support open interfaces.

Between this year and the beginning of next year, we will deploy open RAN pilots in our core markets of Brazil, Germany, Spain and the UK.

Our intention is then to ramp up towards the thousands of nodes in these markets. The ambition is for open RAN to reach up to 50% of the 4G and 5G RAN growth between 2022 and 2025.

We are helping to develop the technology further through our strategic collaborations with Altiostar, Gigatera Communications, Intel, Supermicro and Xilinx.

Order for Pickup’ First-Timers: A Look into Pandemic-Inspired Behavior Shows More Consumers are Buying Online and Picking up in Store

by Rakuten Intelligence - October 02, 2020

As merchants continue to shift their business models and add contactless experiences to meet the changing demands of the COVID-19 era, ‘click and collect,’ or online ‘Order for Pickup,’ has not only become widely available, but increasingly more popular.

This change in consumer behavior has led to a historic rise in online Order for Pickup orders, with many trying it for the first time. From March through May alone, ‘click and collect’ order volume was up 202 percent, with almost 30 percent of all orders being driven by consumers who are new to using Order for Pickup services, or “first-timers”.

However, Jaron Waldman, CEO and Co-founder of Rakuten Ready, says buying behavior has been altered dramatically since the start of the pandemic.

The trend has continued to catch on with consumers. The Order for Pickup cohort in May 2020 reached 23.1 percent of all online buyers, representing just over a 1.5x increase over February 2020 (14.4 percent), and again, beating out the December 2019 Holiday cohort of 21.3 percent. The Order for Pickup cohort dipped slightly in June 2020 to 20 percent.

RAKUTEN-CHEF HIROSHI MIKITANI Japans E-Commerce-Pionier ist ein Vorbild für Deutschland

von Martin Fritz
23. November 2020

models that promise to revolutionize the telco vendor ecosystem

Telecoms.com periodically invites expert third parties to share their views on the industry’s most pressing issues. In this piece public cloud evangelist Danielle Royston looks at the disruptive effect Japanese MNO Rakuten is having on the broader market.

It takes a lot to truly unsettle telecoms operators, which have functioned in the same self-contained way for decades. But it’s finally happening – Japanese disruptor Rakuten Mobile is making significant waves in the industry with its telco-in-a-box network.

Rakuten says operators can reduce CAPEX by 40% with this approach (see this telecoms.com article for the breakdown). Cloud-based networks are, basically, hugely efficient – to a level that telcos thinking traditionally could not envisage in a million years.

The benefits of the cloud to the telcos are so painfully obvious that the surprise is not that Rakuten is seizing the initiative, rather why it has taken so long for someone to be that pioneer. Having the vision and patience to go for transformation, rather than skipping nervously around the edges of innovation, takes character and focus.

Rakuten Mobile is driven by just such an individual. CTO Tareq Amin was previously at India’s Reliance Jio, which thoroughly disrupted the country’s mobile market, basically by enabling consumers to actually use their phones by making data affordable – and by doing so arguably catalyzed the digitization of that nation.

25.11.20 07:14

At Rakuten, we start a lot of new projects and set bold goals with our timelines. Yet it’s patience that often yields the most robust results. We see this clearly now in our content business. Rakuten TV is now available in 43 countries and regions across Europe, reaching 90 million households. Combined, our video streaming service Rakuten Viki, global e-reading service Rakuten Kobo and messaging and calling app Rakuten Viber were profitable for the first time in the last quarter of 2019. Since the pandemic, these three overseas digital content services have seen strong continuous growth with revenue increasing +23.1% YoY in the most recent quarter of 2020.

These brands are in direct competition with some of the most fearsome rivals around. They’re Davids facing the tech world’s biggest Goliaths. But from the start we vowed to treat them with the patience that they deserve and we are now seeing them make their moves. Rakuten Kobo has grown into a leader in the global e-book space. Rakuten Viki is seeing strong subscription growth. Rakuten Viber has expanded its user base, improved its offering and is growing its ads business.

These are businesses we might have lost patience with if we were overly consumed with short-term performance; five years is a long time in the business world. But we remained committed to their evolution and confident in our vision of creating the world’s most robust customer ecosystem. Beyond the success of these individual brands, the collective success of the content business will serve us well in our new efforts: As we continue to grow our mobile network offering in Japan through Rakuten Mobile and offer our technical expertise to telecommunications companies around the world through Rakuten Communications Platform, we will be able to tap the synergy between content and network services. Call it a patience dividend.

Open RAN is eminently suitable for a nation such as the UK

Last March, NEC and Rakuten Mobile – Japan’s fourth and newest mobile telecom carrier – announced that production of equipment for Rakuten Mobile’s Open RAN network had begun at NEC’s Fukushima factory.

Since then, Rakuten has been building base stations and launching 5G services in parts of Hokkaido and the greater Tokyo and Osaka-Kobe metropolitan areas. It aims to expand nationwide by March 2021.

Rakuten Mobile is creating what Chief Technology Officer Tareq Amin calls “the world’s first end-to-end fully virtualized cloud-native mobile network” using equipment and software from Cisco and Nokia as well as from NEC to provide Japan’s cheapest 4G and 5G services.

Rakuten is demonstrating the viability of a flexible open-architecture multi-vendor approach that eliminates dependence on custom-built networks from single suppliers. This is eminently suitable for a nation such as the UK that is technologically sophisticated but lacks its own national telecom equipment champion.

Last May, the Open RAN Policy Coalition was launched in the US. Executive Director Diane Rinaldo was previously acting administrator of the National Telecommunications and Information Administration and acting assistant secretary of commerce for communications and information.

Members of the coalition include NEC, NTT, Rakuten Mobile and Fujitsu from Japan, Samsung, Nokia, Verizon, Telefonica and Deutsche Telecom along with AT&T, Cisco, Dell, Microsoft, Oracle, Qualcomm, Xilinx and numerous other American companies.
