By Bridget Goldschmidt - 06/11/2020

Predictive-arrival technology provider Rakuten Ready has debuted its “Playbook for Creating Contactless Experiences,” a resource guide for retailers, grocers and restaurants, which have seen online-order-for-pickup orders grow 201% in the two months between February and April 2020, according to the company.

Featuring proprietary research, use cases and expert insights, the playbook aims to provide guidance on specific actions for reimagining operations and creating a contactless experience that assuages consumers’ worries and protects employees.

“Consumer buying behavior has completely upended how merchants approach their business models,” said Jaron Waldman, CEO and co-founder of San Mateo, California-based Rakuten Ready. “It also brought forward a much more challenging environment where safety and transparency are critical for business sustainability and essential to protect the health of their consumers. The successful execution of a contactless order for pickup strategy throughout the customer journey is paramount. The Rakuten Ready Contactless Playbook will help guide businesses in the right direction.”

The Rakuten Ready Contactless Consumer Survey, conducted in April, found that 76% of consumers used online order for pickup for the first time as because of mobility limitations stemming from the COVID-19 pandemic.

The playbook discusses such key insights as consumers spending where contactless delivery is prioritized; contactless payment solutions, customer-centric order prep, and contactless handoff or pickup as the three pillars expected by consumers in an order-for-pickup experience; and the centrality of technology such as predictive arrival to the contactless order experience.

The company is offering the resource free for download on its website.

Formerly known as Curbside before it joined the Rakuten family in 2018 and changed its name a year later, Rakuten Ready works with brands such as Kroger, Applebee’s, PetSmart, Petco, Nordstrom and Chick-fil-A to power their mobile-order-for-pickup programs.

Rakuten Super Logistics (RSL) and Nutraceutical Company

Providing retailers the fulfillment tools and services to compete with any online retailer in the world.
2-Day Network increased speed of delivery and decreased shipping costs by 35%

Why did you decide to outsource your order fulfillment?

We were looking to change warehouses and wanted to work with someone who had technology that was integrated to our CRM system, and who had warehouses that were centrally located to our customers. Additionally, we wanted a company that knows how to work with a nutraceutical and subscription business. Rakuten Super Logistics (RSL), met that criteria and was very responsive when we reached out to them.

What is the added value in bringing RSL into your business operations?

We love having a business that’s automated and love the ability to push a high amount of volume through RSL. We can go days without even looking at the system because we are confident that it’s working. The technology integration was seamless and the ability to get order tracking is also very valuable. Previously, I’ve used warehouses that were close to where my business is because I wanted to be near them, but with RSL I don’t need to be close because I know that they are handling my business.

You recently began utilizing multiple warehouses - how has this affected your business?

We have been doing some cost analysis and by spreading our inventory across multiple warehouses, we have had a significant drop in our shipping costs. We have saved about 35% for each package going out the door. Additionally, customers are receiving their products a full day earlier than they had been, so it’s a win-win.
How important is it that you have a customer support representative on-site with your inventory that you can call, as well as a fulfillment center that you can visit?

Having a dedicated customer support representative has been imperative. We won’t work with a fulfillment company unless someone is there to answer our calls and emails. It is really important to have a customer service representative who is responsive and it’s been great working with our representative.

How do you view your relationship with Rakuten Super Logistics (RSL)?

I think that RSL being on the ball is what helps my business. They are helping me succeed and I am excited about the savings we can continue to look forward to by using multiple warehouses which will really change the dynamics of my business. I appreciate what RSL has done so far and like being able to have an open dialogue. It is imperative to have good fulfillment operations because you are part of the system that allows me to run my business. I don’t even have to think about RSL because you are doing your job and you are
doing it seamlessly.

Pulling all the stops with Computer Vision in Online Shopping

Posted by cheryl.ng@visenze.com June 22, 2020

ViSenze is one of the pioneers applying computer vision in retail, and we are very excited to see another large scale adoption of computer vision technology in real life and also in use cases like visual search and image tagging. Computer vision is fast becoming a mainstream technology used across retail and online shopping. So what is it about computer vision and its ability to truly open up the windows of shopping?

Visenze visual shopping engine and the technology behind it

Our ViSenze Shopping’s snap and search technology enables customers to snap a photo and find products from more than 1000 ecommerce sites globally. The technology has already been integrated with most of the major mobile OEMs in the world. Presently, more than 200 million activated mobile users worldwide are using ViSenze Shopping, ViSenze’s snap and search feature embedded into the native camera lens of smartphones of Huawei, Samsung, Vivo, Oppo and LG daily. This shortens the path of conversion by instantly bringing shoppers to the most relevant products.

The United States and Japan Should Team Up on 5G
JAMES L. SCHOFF,  RIKA KAMIJIMA-TSUNODA
JULY 23, 2020
COMMENTARY

The first area for collaboration leverages the private sector, as U.S. and Japanese companies are jointly promoting a promising approach involving Open Radio Access Network (Open RAN) equipment. Radio Access Network (RAN) is the part of a wireless telecommunications network that connects individual devices to the core network through base stations and antennas. Traditional RAN equipment usually comes with supplier-specific software and hardware pairings so those of different vendors are not interoperable, but Open RAN allows multiple operators and vendors to share a network through an open interface.

The major Japanese e-commerce conglomerate Rakuten, for example, has recently entered into the mobile carrier business. It created a new mobile network company that assembled the first end-to-end fully virtualized network, launched entirely on the cloud for an Open RAN platform. The virtual network allows for Open RAN and requires less hardware investment. Without it, it is hard to avoid a lock-in system of company specific hardware and software. Rakuten invested in Altiostar Networks, a U.S. mobile network builder, to construct its 5G-ready virtualized RAN software. Rakuten also partnered with Mavenir, a U.S.-based, virtualized, cloud-native network software provider (designed for cloud computing) for Rakuten’s 5G voice and messaging service. In addition, U.S. broadcast satellite provider DISH Network is partnering with Japan’s Fujitsu, Altiostar, and Mavenir on its own Open RAN virtualized network.

This Open RAN model contrasts with Chinese vendors’ models, which generally seek to lock telecom carriers into using only one company’s (for example, Huawei’s) hardware and software. By promoting Open RAN, companies and countries can benefit from new opportunities to compete and partner in flexible ways, taking advantage of the best they have to offer. It can also lower the stakes of the initial decision on a 5G provider and encourage companies to be more accountable. As a result, it can dial down the geopolitical tension surrounding this technology.

As people worldwide have been hunkered down inside during the coronavirus pandemic, online activity has been increasing and the world’s digital transformation has become more important than ever. For example, average daily traffic for video chat, remote work services, streaming services, and online media has increased by double digits for many websites and services, and in some cases by 80 to 100 percent.

The pandemic has accelerated this digital transformation, and 5G is likely to be the backbone of the infrastructure that supports this shift. A global approach to developing 5G networks will be more efficient and productive than splintering the marketplace with exclusive vendor arrangements. This global approach will also limit the ability of countries to pressure others economically, because of how much sunk costs in a particular company’s equipment already exists in their networks. In this context, openness is a way to depoliticize the current competition and let it play out more like other industries do. Accomplishing this will require countries to work together at various levels. Close coordination between the United States and Japan will be a useful way to make sure that this collaboration is as productive as possible.

Rakuten Viber, one of the world’s leading apps for free and easy communication, announced the launch of its Message Reactions feature in communities to take ‘likes’ on its platform to the next level.

As the demand for instant messaging rises globally, Viber is expanding its users’ creative palette to ensure they can fully express themselves over messages in a quick and fun way, said a press release.

To react to messages, users will simply long-tap the heart icon next to any message and show their like, lol, shock, sadness, or anger reaction. The broad range of emotions empowers users to react to messages, media, and content shared in their Community perfectly. Communication is a two-way street, and it’s essential for users also to have the ability to see how their peers have reacted to their messages. To do so, users simply long-tap the message and choose ‘Info’ to see the broad range of expressions others have left on their messages.

Ofir Eyal, Chief Operating Officer, Viber, said, “Viber is committed to empowering users to express themselves in the most accurate way possible. The ability to simply ‘like’ a message with a heart didn’t encompass the wide range of emotions people can experience when reading a message, and we needed to do more. The Message Reactions feature enables users to react in the most fitting way.”

Rakuten Viber is part of Rakuten Inc., a world leader in e-commerce and financial services.

als 08/15-eCommerce-Anbieter, wie die frühere Buy.com einer war, hat man als kleiner Anbieter gegen Amazon auf dem US-Markt keine Chance - auch wenn die Aktienmärkte das eher negativ sehen.

Japanese conglomerate Rakuten  has pulled the plug on its U.S. online retail store, originally known as Buy.com, and will wind down its operations over the next two months, the company confirmed to TechCrunch. The shutdown means that the US headquarters will lay off its staff as well, meaning 87 people will lose their jobs, according a source familiar with the developments.

“We have decided to sunset the U.S. Rakuten Marketplace,” a company representative said in an email to TechCrunch. They clarified, however, that the “cash back rewards” referral business the company operates at Rakuten.com (formely Ebates, which it bought for $1B in 2014) “is definitely not shutting down and is stronger than ever.”
