Strong growth of Viber in the countries in the Asia-Pacific

The COVID-19 pandemic has brought a lot of uncertainties in many industries. While losses are countless and impactful, the wins though not as many have also provided a ray of hope amid gloomy business forecasts. However, the first half of 2020 brought a new set of experiences for the Rakuten Viber team, but also a new set of milestones, said a press release.

Compared to the 2019 data, Viber has recorded an increase of usage in Bangladesh during the first half of 2020, with a 17% increase in activations, a 21% increase in sending group messages, and 25% in one to one message. The number of messages sent in a group experienced robust growth as well, with a 48% rise, while community Views increased to 77%.

Similarly, the rest of the region experience accelerated activity, especially when it comes to communicating within Groups and Communities. Countries in the Asia-Pacific saw strong growth in the number of messages sent within Viber groups compared to 2019—Myanmar at 41%, Nepal at 67%, Sri Lanka at 91%, Vietnam at 43% and Philippines at 95%. Community Engagement similarly grew, with most countries almost doubling their numbers of Community Views, Myanmar at 106% growth, Sri Lanka at 118%, and Nepal at 195%, respectively. In the Philippines, Community engagement experienced robust growth as well, with a 2.5x increase in community viewers and 2.7x growth in messages sent within Communities.

Was meint Ihr? Aber bitte keine is-super-und-so-Antworten, das weiß ich selber, sonst würde ich mich ja nicht für Rakuten interessieren. Seht Ihr noch Baustellen oder Pullbacks?
Wer will evtl. später rein und warum?
Vielen Dank

Following the deal, Carousell will be valued at over US$900 million which will inch the startup to a unicorn status. This is an elevation over the US$850 million valuation the startup achieved in November 2019, after it merged with rival 701Search, then a unit of Telenor.

Huawei Ban Spurs New Competition for Ericsson, Nokia

Ian King

Bloomberg•September 18, 2020

(Bloomberg) -- The U.S. ban on Huawei Technologies Co. was supposed to hand leadership of the lucrative market for wireless base stations to Ericsson AB and Nokia Oyj. It’s not working out that way.
The crackdown on China’s largest technology company has given startups such as Altiostar Networks Inc. and new entrants including Qualcomm Inc. a rare opportunity to grab a slice of the $35 billion the telecom industry spends each year on this crucial part of mobile phone networks.

“This could break up that tech vendor lock-in that’s been around for decades,” said Andre Fuetsch, chief technology officer of network services at AT&T Inc., the third largest U.S. wireless carrier. “It’s about how do you create a much more competitive, innovative ecosystem.”

Base stations are the heart of cellular networks, powering millions of antennas that perch on cell towers and city rooftops all over the world. Until recently, these boxes were a proprietary combination of processors and software that had to be purchased all at once. Huawei, Ericsson and Nokia account for three quarters of this market, which is worth as much as $35 billion a year, according to researcher Dell’Oro Group.

Open radio access network, or O-RAN, changes this by creating an open standard for base station design and ensuring all the software and components work well together -- no matter who is supplying the ingredients.

Rakuten Beats Australian Competition With Lower Trading Costs
As the Australian FX industry becomes more challenging, brokers may have to focus on spreads

Sylwester Majewski |
Wednesday, 11/03/2020

The lowest total costs of trading were offered by Rakuten Securities Australia (RSA). The average total cost of transactions on four major FX pairs was equal in the case of Rakuten Securities Australia up to $6 USD. Similar costs for the last-placed broker in the rankings was equal to $11 USD per trade. Rakuten had the lowest costs in all the pairs covered in the research.

The Australian branch of Japanese Rakuten Securities also had very preferable swap points values. In six cases, their offer was more profitable for retail traders than the offer of their competitors. The lowest FX costs of trading offered by RSA may be due to the relationship with their Japanese parent company. Overall, the Japanese retail FX industry remains the largest in the world, representing 1/3 of total global FX retail volume.

The 14th Performance Marketing Awards (PMAs) hosted by PerformanceIN, recognises the work of performance marketing leaders across the UK. This year, we’re honoured to receive two wins, the first for our work with Cult Beauty in the Best Managed Affiliate Programme – Enterprise category.

2019 saw three key objectives for Cult Beauty and the affiliate channel: maintaining consistent Year-on-Year (YoY) growth while finding new revenue streams through new customers acquisition and new partnership verticals. Through a collaborative approach with publishers implemented by Rakuten Advertising and strategic recommendations, Cult Beauty achieved +58% YOY growth. The team also formed partnerships with a new era of publishers to create a new revenue stream for the affiliate channel.

Speaking about Rakuten Advertising, our peers commented “the team there are awesome. The tools provided are excellent – the dashboard is very easy to use.”

Over the past 12-months, we’ve continued to invest heavily in new technology and products to deliver our goal of providing industry-leading technology that meets the needs of our publishers and enhances their performance. This has resulted in rapid growth across France and Germany, plus consistent double-digit growth in the UK, leading to 31% YoY growth in gross merchant sales across Europe. Additionally, we were able to facilitate over US$1 billion+ in publisher payouts over the 12 months.

Speaking on the win, our VP of Publishers, International Rakhee Jogia commented: “We’re so excited and proud to have been voted the Publisher’s Choice of Network and are really appreciative of our partners who took the time to vote for us.”

Rakuten Viki brings us together (virtually) through Asian entertainment

South Korea’s entertainment industry is on a roll. Earlier this year, Bong Joon-ho’s Parasite won four Academy Awards, including Best Picture, while breakthrough boyband BTS has dominated global music charts. Western audiences are opening up to Asian entertainment like never before.
A notable contributor to this movement is video streaming service Rakuten Viki. Known to the online community as the destination for Asian dramas and movies, Viki has found an innovative solution to the language barrier: a passionate community of volunteers that not only translate Viki content but also help content creators discover and reach new audiences from all over the world.

The platform’s simple in-browser subtitling tools allow community volunteers to easily provide translations for their favorite dramas in their own language, any of the more than 150 languages available on Viki.

With 2020 shaping up to be the year of the great indoors, streaming services like Viki have become an essential entertainment escape. In the first half of the year, Viki saw over 50% year-on-year growth in its subscription business as well as its monthly active users, which recently surpassed 15 million among 32+ million registered users.

“We are seeing Asian content take off in many parts of the world,” says Rakuten Viki CEO Sam Wu, who leads the business from its offices in San Mateo, California. “Two-thirds of Viki’s users are outside of North America, in countries across Europe, South America, Southeast Asia, India, and Australia.”

Tech Mahindra sells Altiostar stake to Rakuten for $45 mn
September 24, 2020

Pune: India’s fifth-largest IT services provider, Tech Mahindra, has sold its entire stake in US-based Altiostar Networks to Rakuten for $45 million, making the Japanese company a majority shareholder in the virtualised radio access network (RAN) technology firm, according to a BSE filing. In 2018, Tech Mahindra invested $15 million for a 17.5% stake in the vRAN firm as part of the US-based company’s $114 million Series C fund raise.

Tech Mahindra said in the regulatory filing on Wednesday that it had divested its holding of 18,518,518 C1preferred shares in Altiostar Networks through subsidiary Tech Mahindra (Americas) to Rakuten USA. Altiostar provides 4G and 5G virtualized RAN software solutions for open interfaces to build an open and secure multivendor web-scale network. Tech Mahindra will continue to work closely with Altiostar following the stake sale, the Indian IT firm’s managing director and chief executive CP Gurnani said.

Separately, Tech Mahindra and Rakuten Mobile, a Rakuten Group company responsible for mobile communications, said the Indian IT services provider will be a preferred partner for global go-to-market opportunities for the Rakuten Communications Platform (RCP). Tech Mahindra will provide its technologies and software capabilities to support the development and deployment of mobile networks for global customers of RCP, it said.

Alternatives to DramaFever to Watch Korean Dramas in 2020

Last Updated by Brittany Hall on September 01, 2020

As of October 2018, DramaFever.com, a popular video streaming site for Korean dramas, Latin Telenovelas, and Asian shows, has been shutdown. This shutdown was inevitable after the licensing fees increased substantially on many of the site’s shows.

Fortunately for fans of the streaming service, there are a number of alternatives available for you to get your fix of the K-drama scene.

Best Alternatives for DramaFever

1.Viki

Viki is one of the most popular alternatives for DramaFever out there and is a combination of the two words “video” and “wiki.” Viki is a global TV website that draws millions of users to discover and watch global prime time shows and movies in over 200 languages.

There is also a mobile app so you can watch your favorite shows wherever you want. Viki offers a wide variety of Korean dramas in HD quality and subtitles are also included in the majority of videos.
While many shows are available to viewers around the world, this is not the case for them all. Due to licensing issues some shows are geo-restricted to certain countries. For example, the popular show “Heirs” show is restricted to European countries while “Medalist Lawyer Heir” is available outside Europe.

If you want to enjoy all the drama the Viki has to offer you’ll want a VPN like ExpressVPN that has servers in over 90 countries, excels at unlocking content, and has high speed servers that are perfect for streaming.

In October 2018, Rakuten set out to change that, partnering with Walmart Japan subsidiary Seiyu to launch the online supermarket Rakuten Seiyu Netsuper.

Socially distant grocery shopping

Meanwhile, the company is also trialing a new in-store pickup service. Unlike many other online supermarkets that ship directly from warehouses, Seiyu already operates a network of hundreds of physical stores around Japan, meaning everything in Netsuper’s online catalog is also physically available somewhere in a nearby store.

With the new pickup trial, users can order and pay for their regular groceries through Rakuten Seiyu Netsuper and have them packaged and ready to go at the counter of their nearest Seiyu supermarket.
“We are running trials in two stores so far,” says Masaki Takeda, who serves on Rakuten Seiyu Netsuper’s board of directors. “Customers can specify a time that’s convenient for them to come and pick up their groceries, which reduces their time spent in-store and eases congestion.”
Takeda says the initiative is particularly attractive to shoppers with young children. “They can just pick up their milk and eggs or whatever they would normally buy and be right out of there.”

Once you go online…

“As of 2019, a mere 2.89% of Japan’s food sales were online, in contrast to 10% across Europe,” Takeda says. “Food is a category in which customers generally want to check the freshness of products with their own eyes before buying. Also, in Japan, you will usually find yourself within walking distance of a convenience store or supermarket. Physical stores are already conveniently located.”

But Takeda is optimistic: For him, Japan’s low e-commerce rate signifies untapped potential. Since March, when the pandemic changed lifestyles for many, Rakuten Seiyu Netsuper has been racing to keep up with the growing demand, seeing sales increases of over 30% as of July 2020.
