How does Rakuten Viber create a balance between branded content and user-generated content?
Rakuten Viber’s main purpose is messaging and calling. The principal reason people use the app is to connect with loved ones whenever and wherever they are in the world, so that in and of itself creates a platform focused on consumers first. To balance that with branded content, we have an ads-lite policy, meaning we offer a limited number of native ad units in places that are not obtrusive to the user or user experience. This ensures users are never deluged by advertising like they are on the web.
We also offer brands the ability to connect in a two-way chat for convenient activities like banking, shopping, travel and shipping notifications, which allows consumers to easily and conveniently respond. Since consumers spend the majority of their time on mobile, brands that work with us are investing in the future of customer relationships today.

“We are challenging the team to get to profitability,” Khosrowshahi later said in a conference call with analysts. He said he expects Uber to be profitable on an Ebitda basis (earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization) in the fourth quarter this year. “We are confident we can reach long-term margins” while eliminating what he called “empty calories” in system inefficiencies, he added.
As Uber cut losses, its business continues to grow. Gross bookings, which include the total value of ride-hailing and food-delivery orders placed on the app, improved 28% year-over-year to $18.1 billion in the quarter. Another key business indicator, monthly active platform consumers, surged 22% to 111 million.

UBER and PINS make me feel that they have pivoted from unicorn status and are now about showing Wall Street that they can make a lot of money if they want to.

Who would have thought it: Uber (UBER) and Pinterest (PINS) executed so well that they actually were able to surprise to the upside. It's pretty monumental given that both of them had the orientation not that long ago of losing a lot of money to make a lot of money. Now they just want to make a little money and we discover that when they go for profitability they can get it.
What's really strange is that when you search for why and how the changes occur, they are really pretty subtle. I think that Pinterest simply got their advertising proposition, particularly, video, to work better. Customers always loved it and are still coming in record numbers.

But some analysts said Lyft is a less-risky bet.
"We prefer Lyft because it focuses on the most profitable business in North America, the largest rides market," Cascend Securities analyst Eric Ross said.
Lyft is reporting fourth quarter earnings on Feb. 11. In October it told investors it would be adjusted EBITDA profitable by the end of 2021. Analysts said they did not expect Lyft to move its profit target.
Lyft has integrated public transit information into its app for seven U.S. cities in the hopes of turning its app into a single transportation platform. Uber has integrated transit information of eight U.S. cities and allows customers in Las Vegas and Denver to purchase public transit tickets through its app.

Cabify, the car-booking service that became Spain’s first billion-dollar start-up in 2018, says it is now profitable — a development it claims is a first for a standalone company in its industry.
Madrid-based Cabify, which is also active in 10 Latin American countries, marked up a small profit of $3m in earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation for the fourth quarter of last year.
Cabify reported net sales of $29m for the quarter and $104m for 2019 as a whole, from a total of $708m in rides. It added that its turn towards profitability was largely because of technology that allowed it to use discounts and subsidies more effectively.
It said that operating free cash flow, which factors in some payments to engineers, was also positive or about break even.
“The business as it is now can sustain itself and survive,” Juan de Antonio, the founder and chief executive of the group, said in an interview. “
Cabify’s big investors include Japan’s Rakuten, with 40 per cent of the shares, and Spain’s Seaya, with about 10 per cent. Employees, including Mr De Antonio, retain about 25 per cent.

Tech transforming healthcare
Virtual healthcare, nanomedicine and robot-assisted surgery: these are just a few of the technological breakthroughs revolutionizing healthcare. While innovations in medtech may not grab as many fevered headlines as speculation on the latest iPhone, there are few fields with this much potential to impact our quality of life. And the optimism in 2020 is palpable.
Speaking about advances in cancer treatment last summer in Yokohama, David Agus told the Rakuten Optimism audience, “The things we can do today would be considered science fiction just a few years ago. It’s an amazing time. For the first time in my career, I can walk into the room of a patient with cancer with real optimism. Optimism is there on the patient’s side and my side.”
Society is continuing to explore and adopt new approaches to age-old problems, and it is driving innovative and agile startups, such as Rakuten Medical, to bring these solutions to market.

Hier die Kurse an den Quartalsende:
Q2/19 = 65,71
Q3/19 = 40,84
Q4/19 = 43,02

In athe past year, operators in all regions have announced Open vRAN plans. And one – Rakuten – is already commercial deployed.
2019 was a great momentum building year for Open vRAN with Etisalat, Vodafone, O2, Viettel and others announcing their intent to deploy Open vRAN and of course the industry pioneer, Rakuten going commercial with a 100% Open vRAN network. The industry is seeing proof that not only does an open environment work, but it simplifies, reduces costs and eliminate vendor lock-in.
