The Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority is considering raising the fee that app-based services such as Uber and Lyft pay when they pick up and drop off passengers at Reagan National and Dulles International airports.

Under the proposal, expected to be presented to a committee of the MWAA board Wednesday, the fee the companies pay would increase to $5 per ride — up from $4. If the past is any indication, the $1 increase would probably be passed on to users.

Ride-hailing services have quickly become one of the most popular means of getting to and from the airport. But their popularity has caused headaches for airport officials trying to manage traffic and curb space.

“Since 2015, [Transportation Network Companies] have grown to millions of annual transactions adding significant vehicle traffic to the Airport’s roadways,” according to a presentation prepared for Wednesday’s meeting. “Growth is not slowing — Year-to-Date 2019 has seen a greater year-over-year-increase in [Transportation Network Companies] trips than at the same point in 2018.”

The future of Cabify

In the Cabify calendar, IPO is a clear objective. For them it is a "further step" in order to obtain additional sources of financing, taking into account its objective of continuing to grow, although they do not have a defined date, said its founder, who does not rule out the alternative of opening a new round of financing . At the moment the company has not entered into benefits, but expects to do so "very soon."

On its future plans, and although it has not ventured a horizon, it has highlighted the "long-term" possibility of selling "packages" to customers, in the manner of telecommunications operators, which included a certain number of kilometers in vehicles with driver and another in scooters, for example.

• Clicking through a shopping portal when you're buying something online is one of the easiest ways to earn extra points, miles, or cash back.

• One popular shopping portal is Rakuten (formally known as Ebates). It offers cash back when you click through its site to retailers like Macy's, Pier 1, and Sephora, but it recently added the option to earn Amex Membership Rewards points as well.

• If you have a US Amex card that earns Amex points, like the Platinum Card® from American Express or the American Express® Gold Card, you can link it to your Rakuten account. Then, select Membership Rewards points as your earning option in your Rakuten account settings.

• The Points Guy values Amex points at 2 cents apiece, so this could be a more valuable option than earning cash back.

Rakuten claims huge edge cloud, as other operators follow suit

Rakuten was the toast of this year’s Mobile World Congress with its ambitious plan to build an end-to-end cloud-native mobile network for 4G and 5G. Since then, the project has lost some of its luster thanks to delays, and reports of significant challenges with tuning up the cloud infrastructure to support the demands of a virtualized RAN. There have also been whispers about ‘too many cooks’, and tensions between the long list of suppliers which are involved in the project, highlighting the downside of an open, multivendor approach. Some of the participants have strong 4G offerings but are not sufficiently 5G-ready for Rakuten’s timetable, sources say, and there is overlap between the responsibilities of some of the partners with integration

E-commerce giant Rakuten Inc.’s mobile unit started taking limited orders for services on its network Tuesday after a delay in installing network base stations forced it to postpone a full-scale launch until next April.

Rakuten has not revealed the new price plan for its full-scale mobile phone services but will not charge cancellation fees, which are often criticized as stifling competition among carriers and keeping charges relatively high.

Rakuten first entered the mobile phone business in October 2014 as a virtual mobile network operator that uses other wireless carriers’ networks.

Its low-cost wireless communication service, Rakuten Mobile, has attracted around 2.2 million subscribers. The company has said it will aim for more than 10 million subscribers by the end of March 2029.

Carousell - Mudah Merger in Malaysia via Telenor Investment
Thursday, 21 November 2019

Carousell, one of the world's largest and fastest growing classifieds, today announced it has signed an agreement with Telenor Group, one of the world's largest telecommunications companies. As part of this equity and cash agreement, Carousell will merge with 701Search, which owns online marketplaces Mudah in Malaysia, Cho Tot in Vietnam, and OneKyat in Myanmar.

Following the merger, Carousell will be valued at more than US$850 million with Telenor Group becoming the largest minority shareholder in Carousell, owning 32 percent of the combined company.
"This has been a significant year for Carousell, with the company achieving unprecedented results in market expansion and revenue growth," said Rakesh Malani, Chief Financial Officer, Carousell. "We are driving rapid consolidation in the region with the OLX Philippines merger earlier in the year, and 701Search today. This transaction further cements Carousell as the leading online classifieds marketplace platform in Southeast Asia. With annualized revenues of over US$ 40 million, a business of over 80 percent gross margin and two profitable markets, we are very well positioned to advance our combined business to the next level."
