Rakuten, Inc. (hereafter “the Company”) announces that it expects to report an impairment loss in the consolidated financial statements for the three months ended September 30, 2019 (July 1 to September 30, 2019).
1. Details
The Company has been applying the equity method to its stock investment in Lyft, Inc. (hereafter “Lyft”), but in the three months ended September 30, 2019, an impairment loss of approximately 103 billion yen is expected to be recorded as a “Share of loss of investments accounted for using equity method” in the summary quarterly consolidated financial statements.
2. Background
The Company decided that because the market price of the shares of Lyft have fallen significantly, there is objective evidence that it is impaired. This result is based on the closing stock price on the last day of the three months ended September 30, 2019, and measuring the recoverable value and comparing it to the book value.
3. Future Outlook
Details of the Company's results for the three months ended September 30, 2019 will be announced in the Company’s financial results announcement scheduled on November 7, 2019.
For the forecast of consolidated operating results for Fiscal Year 2019, the Rakuten Group aims at double-digit growth from the previous fiscal year for consolidated revenues, excluding results from the securities business which are significantly impacted by the stock market.

We’ve dipped into that database, using the Best Stocks to Buy tool, to find several stocks that Deutsche Bank has recommended as we start the fourth quarter.
Uber’s main competitor, Lyft operates across the US and Canada. Through its popular mobile app, Lyft markets a network of on-demand car rides, scooter rental, and bicycle sharing. The company controls a 28% market share in this niche, making it the second largest ride-sharing company in the US.
Deutsche Bank’s 5-star analyst Lloyd Walmsley sees reason for optimism in the earnings report. He noted, “Strong results combined with a faster than expected path to EBITDA profitability, which could come even sooner than recent guidance (we now model 3Q 2021), reaffirms our view that the market is underappreciating the earnings power at Lyft… we think Lyft is well positioned to show continued ramp towards profitability.”
Walmsley rates LYFT stock a Buy along with a $70 price target, which suggests an impressive 70% upside to the stock.

Nice Ride Minnesota plans to remove the blue “dockless” bikes from its Minneapolis bike-share system in 2020 while at the same time adding 2,000 brand new pedal-assist ebikes.
The new ebike models — which will completely replace the ebikes Nice Ride introduced earlier this year — come with an attached cable lock. As long as the city approves the plan, that would mean Nice Ride ebikes could be locked to any public bike rack.
Nice Ride has no plans to ditch its classic green bikes, which must be picked up from and returned to one of the 200 stations located around Minneapolis. Those stations will also accommodate the new ebikes, and Nice Ride plans to offer riders a financial incentive to get them there: Park at any public rack for $1 or avoid the fee by docking at a station.

Lyft acquires operator of Nice Ride Minnesota
Users will be able to access the bikes by using the ride-sharing firm's app in 2019.
By Tim Harlow Star Tribune
NOVEMBER 30, 2018 — 10:03PM
Bike sharing in the Twin Cities is under new ownership with a bright-pink color scheme.
Lyft, the ride-hailing giant, bought the company that runs the popular on-demand bicycle rental program Nice Ride in a deal that closed Thursday. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Lyft’s acquisition of Motivate, which also runs several other large bike-sharing programs across the country, makes it the largest bike rental company in the United States.
The deal will allow users to rent the bikes in the Twin Cities and places such as New York City, San Francisco, Chicago, Boston, Portland, Ore., and Columbus, Ohio, by using the Lyft app starting in 2019.

Thanks. Catherine. Good afternoon everyone, and thank you for joining our call today. Q3 marked a third quarter in a row of outstanding performance, since becoming a publicly traded company. Revenue grew 63% year-over-year. Active Riders grew 28%, revenue per Active Rider grew 27%, contribution margin was at a record high over 50%.
Our top line momentum and our success with strategic initiatives in our core operations led to a 32 percentage point improvement in adjusted EBITDA margin year-over-year. As we said, just last week, we expect to be adjusted EBITDA positive in Q4 2021. We believe this is a year earlier than consensus expectations. Clearly, we are focused on achieving profitable growth and our results this quarter demonstrate that.

Investors looking for exposure to the ride-hailing segment should pick LYFT Inc (NASDAQ: LYFT) over its larger rival Uber Technologies Inc (NYSE: UBER), according to CNBC's Jim Cramer.
Why It's Important
The recent earnings reports show a major contrast between the two companies.
Lyft continues to lose money, but management deserves credit for communicating "major strides to get costs under control," Cramer said.
Lyft's guidance of positive EBITDA by 2021 "sounds credible," he said.
At the same time, Uber looks to be "committed seemingly to losing money," especially with its Uber Eats business, Cramer said.
Uber has a "complicated" business model with different units, and if there is anything the Street dislikes, it's "complication," he said. Specifically, Uber is far from a pure-play on ride-hailing.

Rakuten Mobile’s dream of becoming the world’s first end-to-end cloud native network operator has been realized, company executives claimed during its third quarter earnings presentation.
The subsidiary of the e-commerce juggernaut is building a greenfield network in Japan that is now providing 4G LTE service to about 5,000 customers on a trial basis. The company hopes to commercially deploy service in the first few months of 2020 followed by 5G later in the year, although it declined to provide any new updates on that timeline this week.
The operator has faced some deployment delays, but executives boasted nearly endless optimism about its achievements to date, including a series of firsts for the industry at large. “Rakuten Mobile has become the world’s largest virtual network function operator across 1,400 different operators, so this has been a big accomplishment. It is no longer a hypothesis or a dream. This has now been deployed, [it is] operational, secure, and most importantly, validated for resiliency architecture,” CTO Tareq Amin said.
Rakuten Mobile also claims to be the world’s largest virtual radio access network (vRAN) vendor. “We provided this together with Altiostar [and] solved very complex problems,” Amin said. “People said we could not do this. It is now fully operational, carrying a massive amount of traffic in the network” with full resiliency and redundancy, he said.
