Rakuten wesentlich besser als Rocket

The country’s three major mobile carriers and e-commerce operator Rakuten Inc. have applied for the allocation of a mobile phone frequency band to introduce next-generation 5G wireless services, the communications ministry said Tuesday.
The Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications will review plans by NTT Docomo Inc., KDDI Corp., SoftBank Corp. and Rakuten before seeking final approval by an advisory panel to the minister on April 10, it said.
Some of the carriers plan to start 5G services, capable of delivering speeds some 100 times faster than the current 4G networks, on a trial basis later this year, with full-scale rollout expected in 2020.
The next-generation mobile networks are considered essential for new technologies such as autonomous driving and the “internet of things.”
Rakuten plans to launch its 4G service in October and is building a network that can also be used for 5G communications.

Rakuten Lifull Stay Inc., the vacation rental brainchild of Rakuten Inc. and Lifull Co. Ltd., has recently launched WillStyleStay, a rental marketplace for single-family detached houses in Japan.
The project is being offered in collaboration with real estate consultant HyAs & Co.
Tokyo-based HyAs, which was founded in 2005, provides consultancy for property construction and development. It also provides sales promotion support.
Rakuten Lifull Stay, co-owned by Rakuten Inc. and Lifull Co. Ltd. since it was founded in 2017, operates two rental marketplaces: VacationStay and MonthlyHomes.

Rakuten believes that 5G will enable disruptive entrants to build cloud-based 5G-ready networks, deploying all services via software in the cloud, breaking each service down in to micro-service components to deploy new applications rapidly and nimbly.
“Every booth [here] is talking about 5G…with a cloud core,” he said. However, Rakuten is taking an end-to-end virtualised cloud-based approach, without specialised hardware anywhere in the network, he said. “From day one, we will be 5G ready,” he said.
He said that Rakuten would deploy “close to 1%” of the dedicated hardware of incumbent players.
This means that Rakuten’s costs will be much lower than traditional players. “Most likely our investment is going to be less than half of traditional companies, just for 4G,” he said. Adding 5G, the saving compared with other players will be more in the order of 70%, he claimed.

Tareq Amin went on to explain that the base stations Rakuten is deploying in Japan have far less kit than those in a conventional cellular network. Each Rakuten site comprises a simplified radio antenna, a remote radio head and a fiber connection. There is no cabinet packed with elaborate electronics. “In my previous job, we had 571 SKUs [different pieces of hardware]. Today, we have four,” Amin noted during an event hosted by Netcracker, another Rakuten partner. That makes the network far more flexible and easier to maintain and upgrade: Simplification translates into much lower operating costs, as well as lower capital spending.
Rakuten estimates its total cost of ownership will be significantly lower than that of a typical cellular network. Although Rakuten’s new network will have thousands of edge data centers, it will be managed by an uncommonly small team. “The level of automation you need to make this work is phenomenal,” Amin stressed.

Everson said that when Rakuten first announced its intentions to build a mobile network, many in the industry didn't know it would work.
"Now what we're showing is that all they have to have out at the cell site is basically the radio and the antenna equipment," he said.
"None of the real processing happens there, and so all they need is a construction person to go out there, not the higher-level technician, but just the construction person to hang the antenna, plug it in, and it's literally plug and play back to the network, so they plug that cable in, it goes back to the OSS and the OSS says, 'I know you', kicks off our orchestration system, which pushes the RAN software out to an edge cloud node -- they have 4,000 edge cloud nodes, they're all built on Cisco virtualisation technology -- pushes the software out there, brings up all the radio software, and connects to the antenna and fires up the network, and we actually have it doing it in a couple of minutes versus days of coordination.
"Rakuten is way beyond a proof of concept, it's a real live network that they're aggressively moving forward with."
The mobile network will also be 5G ready, according to Cisco, with 5G-enabled IPv6 transport and mobile backhaul.

Lyft is likely to be among the first of a hefty class of 2019 public offerings.
Lyft announced in December it had confidentially filed for an IPO, but declined to add financial specifics then.
Reuters reported earlier that Lyft expects to be valued between $20 billion and $25 billion in its IPO.

(Bloomberg) -- A Japanese retail billionaire, rather than a Silicon Valley wunderkind, is the biggest beneficiary of Lyft Inc.’s impending initial public offering.
Hiroshi "Mickey" Mikitani’s e-commerce group Rakuten Inc. owns 13.1 percent of the ride-hailing company, offering documents show. That would be worth more than $2.9 billion if Lyft goes public with a valuation in the middle of its anticipated range of $20 billion to $25 billion.

The Rakuten Cloud Innovation Laboratory, which opened its doors on February 20, 2019, is a unique, fully automated testing facility that aims to foster innovation across mobile network, IT digital architecture, cloud and enterprise applications.
Rakuten primed to lead 5G revolution
While traditional telecoms race to prepare themselves for the coming 5G revolution, their reliance on legacy telecom hardware is holding them back. In contrast, Rakuten has no outdated infrastructure to maintain, and thus the company does not need to face the challenge of transforming their network from 3G or 4G to 5G.
“5G is the universal growth code that will fuel growth across industry verticals and domains,” added CP Gurnani, managing director and CEO of Tech Mahindra. “The Tokyo 5G lab is just the beginning of what Rakuten and Tech Mahindra can achieve to define the 5G Economics of future.”
“From day zero,” Rakuten Mobile Network chief technology officer (CTO) Tareq Amin explained, “Rakuten network is 5G ready.”

"Slowing revenue growth, widening losses
Lyft doubled its net revenue in 2018, but that was a decelerating growth rate from a year earlier. The ride-hailing company posted revenue of $2.2 billion last year, up from $1.1 billion in 2017 and $343 million in 2016. The company’s losses are getting steeper as revenue grows: Lyft generated a net loss of $911 million in 2018, compared with losses of $687 million and $683 million in 2017 and 2016, respectively.
The company’s bookings, which represent the total dollar value of transportation spending through Lyft services, climbed to $8.1 billion from $4.6 billion in 2017 and $1.9 billion in 2016. Lyft’s net revenue represented 27% of the company’s bookings in the latest period. "

„J.P. Morgan, Credit Suisse, and Jefferies are lead bankers on the IPO. General Motors stands to do very well in the offering; the $500 million investment the automaker made in 2016 could be worth more than $2 billion; Rakuten’s $700 million-plus investment could reach $3 billion. Legendary venture capital firm Andreessen Horowitz may stand to realize the greatest return on the IPO: the $60 million a16z put into Lyft in 2013 could be worth $1.6 billion when the company goes public.
Lyft’s revenue has grown exponentially, from just $343 million in 2016 to $2.2 billion in 2018, but so have its losses. Like its chief competitor Uber, Lyft has never turned a profit, and burned $991 million last year. That loss was 32% more than Lyft’s 2017 losses, but gross revenue doubled in the same period.“

Unlike a typical ecommerce platform like Amazon.com (NASDAQ:AMZN) or eBay (NASDAQ:EBAY), Pinterest has made buying highly engaging. The members of the site can pin their favorite items, creating compelling boards. In fact, there are 175 billion pins!
Here are some other notable metrics:
There are 250 million MAUs (monthly active users).
50% of the traffic is outside the U.S. and 80% comes from mobile phones.
93% of active pinners use the service to plan for purchases.
So yes, monetization has been strong. For 2018, revenues are estimated to have increased by 50% to $700 million. And as for the valuation of the Pinterest IPO, it is projected at about $12 billion.
