Tokyo, October 2, 2018 - Rakuten Mobile Network Inc., today announced that it has collaborated with Nokia to successfully conduct over-the-air 5G trials using the Nokia AirScale base station and the Intel® 5G Mobile Trial Platform.
Rakuten Mobile Network received approval for its Special Base Station Deployment Plan (1.7GHz frequency band) in April 2018 and aims to launch its first mobile services as a Mobile Network Operator (MNO) in October 2019. Rakuten Mobile Network is collaborating with a number of vendors including Nokia on the design and construction of its nationwide mobile network. Going forward, Rakuten Mobile Network and Nokia will also work closely together on 5G technology testing and evaluation.

Tokyo, October 4, 2018 - Rakuten, Inc. today announced the expansion of the coverage area of the Rakuten EXPRESS door-to-door delivery service to include the 14 cities of Fuchu, Chofu, Nishitokyo, Mitaka, Kodaira, Hino, Musashino, Tachikawa, Tama, Kokubunji, Koganei, Inagi, Komae, and Kunitachi in the Tokyo metropolitan area* .
Rakuten EXPRESS currently provides delivery services for goods from Rakuten Direct, Inc., a Rakuten Group e-commerce service offering daily necessities, Rakuten Books, and some of the deliveries handled by the Rakuten Super Logistics service, which provides logistics for merchants on the Rakuten Ichiba marketplace. In addition to Tokyo’s 23 wards and the cities of Ichikawa, Funabashi, Urayasu, and Matsudo in Chiba Prefecture, the service now covers 14 cities in metropolitan Tokyo—with plans for further expansion in the future.
The expansion of Rakuten EXPRESS is part of Rakuten’s “One Delivery” vision for a comprehensive delivery service providing everything from storage to delivery for merchants on Rakuten Ichiba.

One source KrASIA spoke to said that Go-Jek is raising a new round that would value the company at US$8 billion, while another told us that the company is looking at a pre-money US$10 billion valuation in the new round.
A US$10 billion valuation would catapult Go-Jek into the same valuation league with regional arch rival, Singapore-based Grab, which was valued at US$11 billion in its last round of financing.
Jakarta-based Go-Jek’s most recent US$1.5 billion round valued the company at around US$5 billion.

Currencycloud, the leading international payment platform, today announced the launch of South Korea’s first remittance service by a non-bank, following its strategic partnership with the country’s leading credit card company, Hyundai Card.
The news builds on Currencycloud’s momentum in Asia-Pacific, with the UK-headquartered fintech signing 14 partnerships in the region in the past year and growing the volume of payments in the region by 66% in the past year since Q1 2017.

Coda Payments, a Singapore-based company working with telcos to implement easy payments for digital products, has secured $2.3 million in Series A funding from GMO Global Payment Fund, Rakuten Ventures, CyberAgent Ventures, Golden Gate Ventures, and Skype co-founder Toivo Annus.
With the money, Coda Payments plans to expand to Malaysia and Singapore. They’re also looking to hire a CFO and a product manager.
The company, which launched in March 2013, has already forged relationships with over 30 digital content providers from Asia. It is also partnering with two Indonesian telcos, Axis and Esia Mobile, each with 12 million subscribers.

Japan’s biggest e-retailer Rakuten Inc., recorded a 2.7 times jump in the combined gross merchandise sales (GMS) of its two consumer-to-consumer marketplaces in the fourth quarter ended Dec. 31, 2017, over the corresponding period a year earlier.
