Rakuten is preparing to list its banking unit with a valuation of around 300 billion yen ($2.1 billion) to 400 billion yen in an IPO as early as December, people familiar with the matter said, asking not to be

Rakuten will pick Goldman, Daiwa for banking unit IPO, say sources

by Deanna Walker September 21, 2022

Rakuten’s fintech segment is growing rapidly into a company that remains largely confined in Japan, despite its ambitions to expand overseas. The company’s credit card, bank, securities and insurance businesses together made up the biggest earners of operating income in the April-June quarter. Rakuten is preparing to separately list its securities unit.

Morningstar analyst Kazunori Ito said, “It makes sense for Rakuten to raise funds to help the banking unit grow — the combination of its e-commerce operations and fintech makes the company a strong, attractive player in Japan. “

Marking Milestones for Telcos’ Cloud-Native Journey

Bejoy Pankajakshan 23 September 2022

Service providers across all geographies are keen to adopt a cloud-native approach to bring down the time to market and gain network agility and flexibility to address evolving customer demands.

Cloud-native is also a requirement for 5G as the core network needs to support cloud-native functions, as per 3GPP standardization. Several Greenfield operators, including Rakuten and DISH, have been building cloud-native infrastructure from the beginning. However, brownfield telcos are also evolving to become fully cloud-native to gain crucial efficiencies, including developing apps faster and scaling them more quickly and easily compared to traditional applications. It also helps them significantly reduce the time to market while reducing operational expenses for the telcos.

Even so, the journey towards full cloud-native networks needs to be meticulously planned and executed so the service providers are able to reap the promised benefits.

In a recent interview with TelecomTV, Mavenir’s Bejoy Pankajakshan, EVP Chief Technology and Strategy Officer, elaborates on the milestones for service providers’ journey to build a fully cloud-native network.

Business Inbox: Viber launches a new feature in Bulgaria

Noa Bar Shay

Senior Partnerships Account Director at Rakuten Viber

Sofia, 01 September 2022 - Rakuten Viber, a global leader in private and secure messaging and voice-based communication, is announcing the launch of Business Inbox: a new feature that will allow for all business messages from official brand accounts to be stored and organized in one folder. Bulgaria is the first country in Viber’s European region to have the new feature. Convenient for users and effective for brands, Business Inbox is Viber’s latest step towards great customer experience within the app.

The new feature will be activated once the first business message is received—for example, an order confirmation from a food delivery, a notification from a bank, a special offer from a store, etc. For users that have had conversations with businesses in the past, the Business Inbox folder will appear right after the Viber version update. Once the Business Inbox folder is created in the chat list, all business messages go there by default. Additionally, this provides another layer of security for brand-user interactions because only chats with verified businesses will go into the folder.

Recent surveys show that 71% of consumers want to have convenient access to communication with a business, and 95% of leaders say that providing a good customer experience is a top strategic priority. In Bulgaria, just within the first half of the year, Viber saw a cumulative growth of 50% across all types of business messages delivered—and 79% growth specifically in conversational business messages (chats with customer support, discussions about an order, etc.).

How this feature benefits users:

Viber values users’ privacy and gives them even more control over their in-app experience thanks to a dedicated folder that separates business interactions from private chats

Each user can arrange interactions with brands to their taste: move chats from Business Inbox to the main chat list and vice versa, pin specific business conversations to the top, etc.

Users won’t miss any important updates from brands, thanks to lock screen notifications and convenient UI

All messages from official accounts land in Business Inbox by default, so messages from verified brands are even easier to recognize

    #9167
25.09.22 14:03

People in Europe know Rakuten TV, Kobo, Viber or Rakuten Advertising, but they might not necessarily know the organization Rakuten Europe. Can you tell us a little bit about its purpose?

We are not a monoline company, but a group of 14 very different services in EMEA, and that comes with its own unique set of challenges. Rakuten Europe does not decide the business strategy for all of those single services, as we believe that they know their audience, their market and their specific areas best. As an organization, we see our purpose and mission as being an enabler, background support and catalyst. We find and create synergies between businesses, we aim to create a positive environment for business expansion and success, and we strive to unite all offers under one brand that consumers recognize as a gateway for their daily needs—which we like to call our Ecosystem.

A few examples of how we achieve that include our partnerships with the likes of Telefonica or the British Fashion Council, and the creation of hub platforms like Rakuten.de, Rakuten.es or Rakuten.co.uk, which bring all our offerings together in an entertaining and rewarding way. We also centralize and bundle our efforts around sustainability, foster diversity and inclusivity throughout the regions and serve as a knowledge and expertise hub.

Rakuten now has 28,000 employees and operates in many countries around the world. But its roots and global headquarters remain in Japan. What’s typically Japanese at Rakuten and what isn’t?

In Japan, we’re not considered a traditional Japanese company, even though the rest of the world might have a different view of us. The reason for this is our approach to bringing together the best of Japanese culture and embracing the influence of our global workforce.

For example, I don’t know any other corporation in Japan that has this level of diversity or a vision formed by globalization. It’s nicely represented in the fact that Rakuten was the first company in Japan to make English its official language, requiring all staff to have a certain level of English language skills. However, I know this might not be considered exceptional from a Western point of view.

On the other hand, our business code, the Rakuten Shugi, in many parts takes inspiration from Japanese culture. Omotenashi, which is Japan’s famous service mentality; Shikumika, which represents strategic thinking; Asakai, which is our all-hands company meeting every Monday morning. We also embrace practices like cleaning your own workplace –which even Mickey himself does – which are clearly rooted in Japanese concepts of respect and community spirit. Again, pretty normal in Japan, but unique from a Western perspective.

Rakuten, NEC, Virgin Media O2 Push Live 5G Open RAN Service

Dan Meyer | Executive EditorSeptember 1, 2022 3:00 PM

Rakuten Symphony, NEC, and U.K. operator Virgin Media O2 are pushing their joint open radio access network (RAN) trial into the field, turning on a handful of live sites on the carrier’s commercial network. The move continues an aggressive government-mandated push for U.K. operators to roll out open RAN technology.

The live trial is using NEC’s system integration services, Rakuten Symphony’s Open RAN software, edge cloud, radio management, and operations systems, and is running in Virgin Media O2’s brownfield network in the Northamptonshire region of the U.K.

NEC has been working with Rakuten Mobile on its 5G deployment in Japan and with a handful of other operators on open RAN-based 5G commercial deployments and network trials.

The Virgin Media O2 deal is also another feather in Rakuten Symphony’s cap.

The standalone company was formed late last year by the Japanese e-commerce giant to push its open RAN architecture into more networks around the world. Earlier this year it scored deployment deals with AT&T, Cisco, Nokia, and Qualcomm, which followed previous deals with operators like Germany’s 1&1 Drillisch.
