Rakuten Symphony SyncUp brings global team together in India

Rakuten Symphony India has never been so in sync. Between July 19 and 21, the company held a pair of Rakuten Symphony SyncUps in Bengaluru and Indore, that included inspiring speeches from global leaders, a celebration of individual and team achievements, and a packed agenda of activities and entertainment – including interactive drum and dance sessions.

The internal employee events were organized to welcome Rakuten Symphony CEO Tareq Amin and other global executives to the region, to strengthen the connections between Rakuten Symphony India employees and to promote a shared understanding of the company’s mission and values.

Rakuten Symphony announces new Global Innovation Lab in Bengaluru

Adding to the excitement of the week was the announcement that Rakuten Symphony will open a new Global Innovation Lab in Bengaluru. Spread over 400,000 sq feet, the facilities are designed to foster a campus environment and provide dedicated R&D and office spaces for Rakuten Symphony’s growing team in the city.

The Global Innovation Lab will be a state-of-the-art facility that re-creates the entire network architecture in a simulated environment, from RAN to Core to transport, enabling function and performance testing. It will also act as a showcase for Symworld, allowing Rakuten Symphony to demonstrate the capabilities and performance of the platform to customers. It will complement and expand upon Rakuten Symphony’s existing RAN network functions lab in Bengaluru and the Rakuten Cloud Innovation Lab in Tokyo, allowing for global end-to-end testing of apps across the Symworld portfolio. Moving forward, there are already plans to establish facilities for 6G infrastructure R&D as well.

Investing in growth in India

After meeting with local leaders in Rakuten’s current office space in Bengaluru and enjoying the first Rakuten Symphony SyncUp to start the week, Amin and an executive team that included Rabih Dabboussi, Azita Arvani, Matthew Johnson, Olivier Alluis, Narendra Narayana, Chika TrueDaniels and more, inspected the site of the new office to see the incredible facilities firsthand.

The global leadership team then traveled to Indore where they received remarkable hospitality from approximately 2,000 local employees. Amin also shared his commitment to continue to invest strongly in the city’s workforce and facilities.

Rakuten Symphony SyncUps Inspire

Attended by more than 1,000 employees in Bengaluru and more than 2,000 in Indore, the Rakuten Symphony SyncUps provided a platform for global leaders to share the strategy of Rakuten Symphony with employees and recognize employee excellence with awards.

On stage in both Bengaluru and Indore, Rakuten Symphony CEO Tareq Amin recounted how he first fell in love with India in 2013 after moving to Mumbai to join Reliance Jio. He was immediately charmed by the riot of colors, sounds and festivities he experienced each day, he noted, and this same unique energy of India was on full display at the SyncUp events as employees reacted powerfully to Amin’s vision for the future of the company.

“You, the employees, are the foundation builders. You are the owner representative and the people who are going to help us achieve our targets,” said Amin. “Regardless of the targets and revenues we want to do, we all need to have skin in the game. You are not just the employee. You are the creator, the foundation, the builder, the entrepreneurs that are going to make this happen.”

“I want you to know that what you have created, what you are creating, is a major disruption,” added Naren Narayana, Managing Director of Rakuten Symphony India. “Can you believe that you, me, all of us, are now part of this vision of democratizing the connectivity of everyone? Not just in your house, not just in your city, not just in your country, but the entire world?”

In a blog on the appointment, Rakuten Symphony noted Syed would lead the integration of software from partners and its recently-acquired businesses Altiostar, InnoEye Technologies and Robin.io into its Symworld platform.

Symworld is the company’s operator-focused cloud-native proposition, which it argues allows swift implementation of various software applications to achieve greater automation in new and existing network infrastructure.

He will work below vocal open RAN advocate and Rakuten Symphony CEO Tareq Amin.
Announcing the appointment Amin said: “Operational complexities have created problems that are limiting operators’ options to scale and monetise their networks with better services. With Zia Syed now at the helm, Symworld is poised to address these challenges and help accelerate telco industry change.”

The 5G hyperautomation of Rakuten Symphony's subsidiary Robin.io

5G is seeing rapid adoption due to its promise of high speed, seamless delivery and low latency, that enables it to deliver new and exciting revenue-generating services. Studies reveal that there will be 1.2 billion 5G connections by 2025, covering a third of the world’s population.[1] 5G will play a critical role in enabling the next-generation of applications and services, like gaming, trade and Industry 4.0, in general.

First things first, the momentum and the scale promised by next-generation mobile networks demand significantly more infrastructure support than the previous cellular generations. Industry estimates show that 50 base stations will be required for every square kilometer to meet the stringent speed and coverage that 5G is expected to deliver.[2] For example, San Jose, California, will need approximately 23,300 base stations, considering the size is 466 km2. In practice, 5G cannot drive any of its desired results without specifically tailored infrastructure at the edge to backend. At this scale, supporting hardware, cloud platforms and services software through manual operations will limit scale and time to market, posing a tremendous risk, and costing operators billions.

Unfortunately, legacy vendors’ platforms, used to deliver NFs and services, rely on status quo life cycle management and are incapable of facilitating rapid 5G buildouts. Most of today’s popular single vendor solutions are based on their legacy solutions, with a bolted on, poorly integrated container automation solution, rebranded as cloud-native – creating operations and resource sharing silos. Furthermore, most of these employ legacy storage solutions piped through a Container Storage Interface (CSI) that are not suitable for business continuity and disaster recovery of stateful containerized edge applications. Regardless of their flashy marketing pitch, these legacy solutions will undoubtably choke future edge deployments somewhere down the line, limiting expansion, creating even more siloes. Lastly, dependency on a single vendor, with a lack of disaggregation severely affects one’s capacity to innovate or scale rapidly – not to mention the cost and opportunity disadvantages.

One of the many things that makes Robin.io different is that we’ve built our products from the ground up to support the needs of 5G, from edge to core, focusing not only on feature and functionality but ease of use and unprecedented automation. Robin’s full functionality isn’t locked behind complex CLI requiring years of expertise. Anyone can operate it! One tier-1 MNO has built a cloud-native, open vRAN software 4G/5G network, leveraging Intel technology, QCT servers and Robin.io’s Kubernetes automation and orchestration platforms. The resulting cloud-native deployment model is optimized with Robin.io’s innovative application-aware storage and carrier-grade networking.

What is Robin.io’s 5G hyperautomation?

Robin.io’s hyperautomation capabilities combine the powers of robotic process automation, AI/ML and related technologies to make automation intelligent and powerful. They cover multiple domains that include bare metal servers, cloud platforms, applications, services, transport-to-cloud network slicing and third-party devices – all of which are driven by automated policies up and down the solution stack.

Used in many industries, including telecommunications, Robin.io’s hyperautomation capabilities enable MNOs to remotely control their entire software and hardware stack, achieve “one-click” service delivery, and rapid scaling and deployment across multiple domains in the solution stack – not just one or two at a time. It is an essential reality for operators who are building on the 5G promise by adopting a digital-first approach. From identifying risks to improving response times, achieving FTR, and significantly reducing costs, Robin.io is supporting multiple 5G use cases with scale and precision.

The big thing that is being disrupted is the business model

Imagining the Possibilities of a Cloud-Native, Massively Automated 5G Network

Even as network rollouts continue, 5G has not yet enabled the disruptive service that was promised. It’s simply not delivered on the promise of fully autonomous cars and remote surgeries. It’s been more of the same.

At the recent Qualcomm 5G Summit in San Diego, Rakuten Symphony America's GM Azita Arvani challenged MNOs to stop thinking the old way. While network speed has improved, operators are struggling to realize the benefits of 5G. Their business models and network flexibility have not evolved to the point that they can facilitate advanced services.

It isn’t surprising that AT&T will be deploying Open RAN equipment in its private networks using small cells according to Minchul Ho, general manager of America at Baicells - a wireless solutions provider.

“AT&T will be able to sell Open RAN solutions to enterprises and give them more choice over how private networks are built, as the technology enables interoperability between different products and vendors,” he says.

“Open RAN can also help to mitigate interference and balance the traffic load between small cells in a private network environment.

“This is an important stepping-stone for AT&T as it looks to roll out Open RAN across its entire network.”

At the event, Fuetsch said that the first Open RAN products would be indoors and inside buildings.

While he didn’t provide any details on the deployment, Fuetsch’s comments as the operator prepares for its mid-band spectrum deployment that will take place later this year.

Rakuten Trade Long-Term Review: 5 Reasons Why it is my Go-To Stock Broker!

MAY 13, 2022

BY CHIN YI XUAN

Last Updated on July 13, 2022 by Chin Yi Xuan

Rakuten Trade has been my go-to broker to invest in the stock market for more than 3 years now.

Rakuten Trade Feature Highlights

Rakuten Trade is a joint venture between Malaysia’s Kenanga Investment Bank Bhd. and Japan’s Rakuten Securities Inc. Established in 2017, Rakuten Trade is under the regulation of the Securities Commission (SC) of Malaysia and holds the Capital Markets Services License (CMSL) to deal with listed securities and provide investment advice

Rakuten Trade is the only broker in Malaysia to offer a full online investing experience as of the time of this writing. From registration to funding/withdrawal, every process is done online at our convenience. No physical forms, no visiting branches (p.s. it’s year 2022 now, not 2000) – stay at home and be safe!

Plus, get your account approved within 3 days (sometimes earlier). This is much more efficient compared to certain brokers that require weeks to approve an account.

Rakuten Trade offers one of the most competitive commission rates in Malaysia. In other words, Rakuten Trade is a fee-friendly option especially for new investors that are starting with a small capital – more below.

Launched in January 2022, Rakuten Trade now offers users access to the US stock market at a highly affordable commission.

Symworld customers have access to a diversity of market optimized solutions

This reliance on telecom has the UK government concerned about the state of competition among telecom equipment providers, and the resulting ability of networks — focused on 5G, but encompassing all telecom networks — to deliver next-generation services. The solution to this challenge is to ensure a competitive field of telecom equipment providers and that comes by adopting Open RAN and its open interface approach along with the large and growing ecosystem of technology providers.

The Open RAN principles paper was developed by the Department for Digital, Culture, Media & Sport and was written to provide guidelines for the Open Network R&D Program, a government investment initiative designed to put up to £250 million into research and development.

“Rakuten Symphony have been working closely with the UK Government for the past 18 months in support of their 5G Supply Chain Diversification Strategy.”

- Nastasi Karaiskos, Managing Director, Rakuten Symphony UK

We think this paper is good for the industry because it reflects and codifies some of the guiding principles behind Open RAN, while also leaving room for the industry to grow and evolve. Mobile network operators (MNOs) can get started now on building out a network infrastructure that meets the guidelines using Symworl from Rakuten Symphony. Symworld is Rakuten Symphony‘s industrialized automation platform for service providers and is currently used by Rakuten Mobile in Japan, 1&1 in Germany and AT&T in the U.S.

In Japan, Symworld has enabled the growth of the Open RAN network to exceed 275,000 cell sites from several different radio vendors, with only 250 direct operational staff. Rakuten Mobile proves Open RAN works at scale and in high coverage density deployments. Tokyo is one of the most densely populated metropolitan areas in the world and Rakuten Mobile has received many rewards for network quality, with umlaut showing at least parity with other networks, and in many cases exceeding the performance of traditional networks.

Let’s take a look at how Symworld stands up to the four guiding principles put forth in the paper:

Principle 1: Open disaggregation, allowing elements of the RAN to be sourced from different suppliers and implemented in new ways.

Symworld is an automation platform and marketplace for telecom network solutions. It provides an “app store”-like environment for onboarding telecom applications and managing their lifecycle.

The foundation of Symworld is its ability to support open interfaces enabling best-in-class support for disaggregated network functions. This, combined with cloud integration, provides customers with a fully open, fully functional solution. To take advantage of this open approach, Rakuten Symphony is partnering with other leading companies—including Nokia, F5, and others—to ensure that Symworld customers have access to a diversity of market optimized solutions.

Rakuten Mobile worked and firms such as Opensignal have shown the Rakuten Mobile network performs on par or better than traditional networks around the world

Symworld emerged from the build out of the Rakuten Mobile network in Japan, where was created to help manage the diversity of network systems to ensure interoperability. The network was built using dozens of technology vendors and the systems now known as Symworld helped to manage the complexity that came with this diversity. And it worked. Setting up 5G RAN at a Rakuten Mobile, cell site takes only four minutes. In addition, firms such as Opensignal have shown the Rakuten Mobile network performs on par or better than traditional networks around the world.
