We Are Symphony: A conversation with Dhruv Sood
Global Digital Marketing Manager
Rakuten Symphony
April 27, 2022
In 2018, the Rakuten Group decided that they would build Japan’s fourth major mobile network from scratch. Coming from the mindset of an internet software company, they wanted to do things differently. So Rakuten took a software-based, cloud-native design approach to building Rakuten Mobile. However, that was just the start. Rakuten’s unique combination of operating models and package of next-gen software platforms, clearly had the potential to transform an entire global industry.
In August of 2021, Rakuten announced the formation of the Rakuten Symphony, a company formed with the vision of making this unique cloud-native and software-based Telco model developed in Rakuten Mobile ‘generally available’ for greenfield and brownfield operators globally. This new model essentially changes the center of gravity from hardware to software in telecom, which is a transformational shift. For example, if you drive a Tesla, you’re driving a software experience with wheels. Fintech banks are a software space. OTT platforms have become the new source of entertainment. Even workplaces today have become virtual spaces thanks to communication innovators like Zoom. Softwarization is the industry’s destiny, and Telco-as-a-platform will be the end game. This journey is truly a marketer’s dream – my dream to be specific.
I believe that the company is on a path to achieving the unthinkable, similar to what SpaceX did with the rocket industry, Netflix did for the entertainment industry, Apple for personal computing and so on. I’m thrilled to have the opportunity to be a part of achieving these bold, transformative goals.

The Metaverse market will grow to over $1,544 billion in less than ten years.
It’s estimated we’ll spend more time in Metaverses than IRL by 2030.
https://www.ragan.com/store/...tors-need-to-know-about-the-metaverse/
From a business finance standpoint, PwC predicts rapid and massive market size growth as depicted in this chart:
Bloomberg analysts are even more bullish, predicting the market may reach $783.3 billion in 2024. Some believe this growth spurt is happening much faster than other technologies because of the social isolation we’ve all felt during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Harris Poll data shows that while more than 50% of Americans don’t understand it, 70% of Gen Z and Millennials are interested in interacting in these digital realms. The data also shows “brand experiences are among the top 3 reasons that young Americans want to explore the metaverse.” Harris’ takeaway is that while the metaverse may be over-hyped this year, there are strong signals that this is not just another bubble like marketers experienced in the early 2000s.
For advertisers, marketers and consumer brands, the current use cases are relatively straightforward. Fashion brands from Nike, Vans, Adidas and Under Armor, to American Eagle, Gucci, Ralph Lauren, DKNY, Tommy Hilfiger, Dolce & Gabbana, Burberry—even Disney—are already raking in millions in virtual attire and accessories sales in MMOs (massively multiplayer online games) and/or NFTs.
Food and beverage brands like Wendy’s, Burger King, Domino’s, Applebee’s, White Castle, Campbell Soup, Hellman’s, Coca-Cola, Pepsi, Budweiser, Bacardi, and Mondelez have entered the space in MMOs or through the sales of NFTs as investment items.
Nearly all of these examples (and more) are being done in coordination with or by their agencies. If you work at an agency or in corporate brand marketing, you may already have some familiarity with NFT drops.
Wunderman Thompson Commerce just released a UK gamers survey that shows about 33% discover new brands while playing virtual world games, and 56% are more likely to buy from a brand that features in their favorite game. The press release states that 41% consider their avatar to be a part of their identity, and some go even further and put the same importance to looking good in-game (61%) as they do to looking good in real life (65%).
Still on the fence? Ad Age warns, “The metaverse has been set up to scratch the itch of socialization in a way that didn’t exist until this moment. Still, that doesn’t make it an easy win for brands—they can still find themselves on the outside looking in if they can’t find a way to organically participate in these new virtual communities. Brands learned these same lessons on the rocky road to understanding how to market on social media.”

LIGHT READING 4/26/2022

One of the largest telecoms groups in the world has spoken out in favor of new mobile evolution that promises to make cellular technology far more flexible and cost-effective. Madrid-based Telefónica and Rakuten Mobile have signed a memorandum of understanding that will see them work together to advance OpenRAN (radio access network) technology, 5G core networks and operations support systems (OSS).
“This is a massive opportunity for all of us,” Enrique Blanco, CTIO of Telefónica, told a webinar announcing the partnership this week. With extensive operations across Europe and Latin America, Telefónica plans to run pilots of OpenRAN technology during 2020 and 2021, as a precursor to “a massive deployment in one of our main cities, our main operations” in the first quarter of 2022. With an OpenRAN system, the hardware and software employed in the radio network can be sourced from multiple different vendors, giving the operator a high degree of flexibility.
Blanco predicted that, between 2022 to 2025, 50% of Telefónica’s upgrades to radio sites will employ this new technology. “This is not a wish, this is not a hope, Rakuten has demonstrated that this is a fact,” he added, alluding to Rakuten Mobile’s successful deployment of Open RAN technologies in Japan. “We will be pushing extremely hard trying to guarantee that this happens.” The pilots will be designed to ensure the new technology can deliver the five nines (99.999%) availability that has long been a benchmark for telecoms networks.

Besides that, we compared Rakuten‘s customer reviews with the other two leading retail e-commerce marketplaces in Japan which are Amazon and Mercari to compare their customer satisfaction. Rakuten had better reviews than the others. Based on the reviews, the satisfaction with Rakuten’s cashback system and the inclusion of sellers’ daily offers on the platform for customers’ convenience was highlighted.
Company
Customer Ratings (Out of 5 Stars)
Amazon 3.2
Rakuten 4.2
Mercari 3.7
Overall, we believe is well-positioned to benefit from the growth of e-commerce with its leading position only behind Amazon and high customer satisfaction. Though, we expect Amazon to pose a strong competitive threat with its superior product breadth and attractive fees for sellers. To project its growth, we expect Rakuten’s member growth to continue growing with a 5-year average growth assumption (7.47%) through 2026.
