Consumers love content  

With people worldwide in lockdown, 2020 saw content publishers work with brands to replace the lack of in-store experience. Across our global networks, 2021 saw this trend continue with the content vertical experiencing double-digit growth (US content subnetworks grew 30% YoY!).  

This shift in behavior and the demand for content consumption have led media houses and content partners to further monetize their offerings. Publishers in the content space have now integrated shoppable content tools that enable consumers to transact at the point of inspiration directly. Additionally, influencers are monetizing live streaming activity as a new way to showcase a brand’s products or services.  

The evolution of the content vertical means advertisers can work more strategically with partners to meet specific KPIs like new customer acquisition or the promotion of a particular product. Gone are the days when content is viewed solely as an upper-funnel branding strategy.  

The resurgence of travel  

It goes without saying that the travel industry was hit hard by the pandemic. Despite new variants, consumers were optimistic about travel in 2021. As lockdown restrictions lifted across regions, consumer confidence grew, and travelers started to book their next adventure.  

Our US network saw the travel vertical grow 56% YoY throughout 2021, with sales increasing 78% in the fourth quarter.  Consumers were just as optimistic about travel in the UK and Canada, with sales rising 99% and 103% YoY, respectively.  

In Asia-Pacific, where travel bubbles between specific countries in the region opened, sales in the travel vertical increased more than 200% YoY, revealing a healthy appetite for exploration.  

Affiliate orders soar in Q4  

The flexibility of the affiliate channel combined with the low-risk, low-cost model has allowed brands to react to market changes and continue driving performance aligned to their campaign goals. For this reason, affiliate marketing has taken center stage as a strategic digital channel, and November of 2021 demonstrated just how powerful it can be.  

Across North America, Europe, LATAM and APAC, Q4 orders from same-store clients surpassed 2020 and 2019 levels. The growth in orders from 2019 reveals that consumers are, or rather have, returned to pre-pandemic purchasing levels. And they’re increasing their purchasing via affiliate partners who enhance their experience, whether through product reviews, vouchers or incentivizing loyalty with cashback.

Japan has four operators offering 5G: NTT DoCoMo, Rakuten, and Softbank. 5G availability in Japan is still not great in terms of overall coverage. Rakuten offers the best average download speeds (224.3 Mbps, but has the least reach of any operator and isn’t available in many areas. What makes coverage so difficult in Japan is the fact that the country does not have any low-band 5G spectrum. Japan’s currently available bands are 3.6 GHz to 4.1 GHz, 4.5GHz, and 28 GHz, all of which have a more challenging time propagating than lower bands. Japan’s coverage problem could potentially be solved by introducing more open-source, low-cost commodity equipment. It appears that Rakuten is taking this tack as part of its Symphony business, which it plans to offer around the world. Leveraging Open RAN, Symphony's goal is to accelerate network deployments, make them more cost-effective, and promote competition. Ideally, this should enable faster and cheaper coverage across Japan and other regions. Future plans aside, Japan’s coverage is still fairly abysmal. Hopefully, 2022 offers a change for Japanese 5G users.

Rakuten has announced the results of using Viber in 2021 in Ukraine. According to the report, in 2021, Ukrainians sent 97.5 billion messages via Viber. That’s about 3,100 messages per second. The number of reports increased by 11% compared to 2020.

According to the company, over 6.7 billion calls were made in Ukraine during the year, more than 200 calls per second. The number of calls in Ukraine increased by 11.5% compared to 2020.

In 2021, group chats had almost 19 million participants. During the year, Ukrainians sent more than 3.8 billion stickers via Viber. This is 13% more than in 2020. Chatbots have grown the most – 27% more than in 2020.

Strong growth of Rakuten Viber in Philippines

Citing the favorable impact of local partnerships, Viber recorded 57.37 percent growth in calls in 2021, while the use of messages expanded by 31 percent. Group chats also grew by 17 percent while group chat messages recorded a growth of 19 percent.

Over half of Viber’s users in the Philippines are part of the younger demographic, with 40 percent belonging to the 25 to 34 age group, followed by those from the 35 to 50 age group at 30 percent.

Filipinos below 24 years old have also started using the app more, accounting for 17 percent of its users, while the remaining 13 percent are 52 years old and up.

“Viber is truly becoming an all-in-one app. It is not only a platform for users to express themselves, but it has also enabled them to transact and be entertained at the same time,” Tse explained. “What matters to us most is the user journey and how relevant we are to their daily lives. Our users remain and will always be at the forefront of our developments.”

Given Viber’s performance in 2021, Tse is optimistic that Viber will be able to move into 2022 in a position of strength. Even when restrictions are lifted, he said the pandemic had already shown people how messaging apps like Viber could unlock efficiencies—like cutting business travel costs and allowing educators to maximize online chats.

Dell’Oro Group recently published the January 2022 edition of its Open RAN report. Preliminary findings suggest that total Open RAN revenues, including O-RAN and OpenRAN radio and baseband, surprised on the upside both in 2020 and during 2021, bolstering the thesis that Open RAN is here to stay and the architecture will play an important role before 6G (this author disagrees).

Open RAN revenues are expected to account for around 15 percent of the overall 2G-5G RAN market by 2026 (see chart below), reflecting healthy traction in multiple regions with both basic and advanced radios.

With the growing demand for 5G technology worldwide, the need for open radio access network (O-RAN) is expected to increase significantly, and in turn, drive the growth of the global open radio access network (O-RAN) market in the coming years. The market registered a revenue of $180 Million in the year 2020 and is further expected to reach a revenue of $22500 Million by the end of 2028, by growing with a CAGR of 85% during the forecast period.

Ride-Hailing Player Cabify Eyes Profits By Year’s End

While the world attempts to take stock of the omicron variant and its impact on travel, ride-hailing giant Cabify said it expects to close out the year with a profit.

Cabify is headquartered in Spain but its operations, which include grocery delivery and micromobility rentals, are largely in Latin America.

The company said in a statement that it expects to close the final quarter of 2021 with turnover of $167 million and full year revenue of $516 million.

Cabify has raised over $470 million from investors including Rakuten Capital.

BENGALURU: Japanese technology giant Rakuten Group that acquired US mobile technology company Altiostar Networks for over a $1 billion, is expanding its footprint in India. Altiostar, which has over 500 engineers at its development centre in Bengaluru, is planning to triple its headcount in India over the next year, said Srinivas Gudladana, head of India operations at Altiostar Networks. He said Altiostar built RAN (radio access network) ground-up from Bengaluru.

Between 2012-2017, Altiostar did the first step of RAN disaggregation, by having CU on COTS (common off the shelf) hardware and virtualising CU. We revolutionised products on off-the-shelf hardware and created open interfaces. Virtualised DU and CU have been deployed across Japan, and now are going to other countries including India,” said Gudladana, who was instrumental in setting up the India centre.

Gudladana said the company will increasingly focus on two strategic priorities -- 5G protocols and virtualised services for the mobile industry. So far, India was the only development centre for the US-based network infrastructure major, but it now plans to hire aggressively in the UK.

"Undoubtedly the key development in 2022 will be the multibillion-dollar investments by three new entrants to build out nationwide, 5G Open RAN networks. Rakuten in Japan is the “first mover” in this technology evolution. It already operates in major urban areas and has over five million subscribers, largely for 4G users, but is spending lavishly to roll out 5G services this year. After much initial doubt and opposition from incumbent telecom operators, the Japanese government and major electronics firms, in an effort to rebuild Japan’s global market share but also to provide an alternative to Huawei, now are supportive of the program to perfect Open RAN and are pushing the U.S. and allies to mover more quickly to develop the new technology.

In the United States, the big three telecom operators are all involved, albeit cautiously in Open RAN standards and technology development. Small, rural operators in Alaska and the Mountain West have installed Open RAN networks. However, the major experiment that will likely spell success or continued languishing of Open RAN is Dish Network. The television and broadband pioneer Charles Ergen has committed, as part of an agreement with the antitrust division of the Department of Justice (DOJ), to build out the fourth nationwide 4G-5G network and has chosen Open RAN for its operating system. Dish is partnering with U.S. electronics, cloud and telecom innovators such as Qualcomm, Dell Technologies, IBM, Intel and Mavenir to build its network. Its commitment to DOJ is to have a functional nationwide network by 2023 which covers 70% of the U.S. population. It has already spent more than $10 billion on its infrastructure and is building out final networks in 42 urban areas. Its first broad, live rollout is planned for April in Las Vegas, and it plans to have operations covering 20% of the population by summer of this year.

In Germany, the upstart telecom operator 1&1 Drillisch AG is committed to building out its own nationwide mobile high speed services using Open RAN technology. The firm is 75% owned by United Internet which has 26 million subscribers, and already operates a landline and mobile telecom service largely based on leasing infrastructure from Telefónica and Vodafone. It is now building its own greenfield 5G network. 1&1 has established goals of serving at least 25% of the German population by 2025 and 50% by 2030 with its new Open RAN network. These goals are part of its commitment, which it hopes to exceed in terms of timing, made as part of its agreement with the government when it purchased needed 5G spectrum. 1&1 is working with Rakuten and NEC to build out the new network and plans at least $10 billion in investment this decade."

Tokyo’s Rakuten Mobile OpenRAN network convinces compared to other metropolitan networks worldwide

In the latest umlaut Audit Report, Rakuten Mobile achieves in Tokyo 920 out of 1,000 points and scores “very good” only about one year after launch and shows the potential of OpenRAN under real-life conditions.

Dabei übersehen sie, dass sich Rakuten über die Kapitalerhöhung (Japan Post, Tencent und andere) in 2021 mehr als 2 Milliarden US-Dollar Eigenkapital verschafft hat und noch einmal zwischen 2,5  und 3 Milliarden US-Dollar Fremdkapital zu günstigen festen Zinssätzen zusätzlich.

Das reicht m.E. bis zu dem Zeitpunkt, wo der Cash Flow von Rakuten wieder positiv wird, den ich irgendwie in der zweiten Hälfte von 2022 ansiedele, wo dann der immer positive gewesene Cash Flow des Kerngeschäfts den negativen Cash Flow von Rakuten Mobile wieder ausgleichen wird. Und selbst Rakuten Mobile wird m.E. bereits 2023 einen positiven operativen Cash Flow haben, und zwar wegen der hohen Abschreibungen, die nicht zu Zahlungen führen, bereits einige Zeit vor einem operativen Gewinn.

permanent meine Bestände erhöht - heute wäre das günstiger gewesen, aber man kann eben nicht exakt die Tiefpunkte treffen.
