Empowering pet lovers in Japan: Rakuten Pet Insurance

According to a survey on pets published by Rakuten Insight in February this year, nearly 20% of respondents reported becoming new pet owners since 2020, an increase of more than 10 percentage points from the previous year and the year before.

Rakuten Pet Insurance’s product offering is dubbed “Zutto Issho [Motto],” (Japanese for “Together Forever [More]”) and has three main features.

First, the range of coverage is wide, and the expense limit is high — one of the broadest in the pet insurance industry.

Second, there is a variety of benefits for policy holders.

Third, with a service unique to the Rakuten Group, policy holders can earn Rakuten Points equivalent to 1% of the annual premium*.

As Rakuten Ichiba is already a popular shopping destination offering special pet owner benefits, the Pet Insurance team is keen to foster a “pet ecosystem” with a broad range of convenient and appealing services for pet owners and their pets.

Virtualized RAN will be the fastest-growing of cloud investmentwith expected to grow from $293 million in 2021 to $12.1 billion by 2026

In conjunction with Altiostar and Red Hat, the analysts at Analysys Mason took a look at what would accelerate Open vRAN deployments across the globe and their answer, published in a recent whitepaper, is automation.

Mobile network operators (MNOs) have been slow to virtualize the radio access network (RAN) due to performance requirements and complexity. However, according to the whitepaper, they are now turning to this area of the network searching for the types of benefits that telecoms operators are experiencing in other network domains. These benefits include lower total cost of ownership (TCO), greater agility in scaling capacity, and the prospect of increased and faster service innovation in the future.

RAN virtualization is being enabled by emerging open standards that support its functional disaggregation into central, distributed, and radio units with new technologies that facilitate its technical disaggregation separating RAN software from proprietary hardware. Virtualized RAN will be the fastest-growing domain in terms of cloud investment, expected to grow from $293 million in 2021 to $12.1 billion by 2026, according to the whitepaper.

Japan's E-commerce Payment Market is projected to reach US$ 297.87 Billion by 2026, from US$ 198.36 Billion in 2020, growing at a CAGR of 7.01%

In recent years, the e-commerce payment industry in Japan has been undergoing tremendous growth. It is projected to accelerate as the trend is moving toward mobile purchases and online shopping. Moreover, with the reputation for embracing technology and being at the forefront of digital innovation, Japan's e-commerce payments growth has been accelerated by ease and convenience.
Despite Japan's typically rapid adoption of new technologies, mobile commerce payment uptake remains relatively low, accounting for more petite than the e-commerce payment market. An ongoing inclination can describe this for desktops and a large ageing population, which is more reluctant than younger generations to adopt smartphones

By Payment Method, Card, Cash, Bank Transfer, and Digital Wallet have become the most commonly used e-commerce payment mechanisms in Japan. As per our analysis, the card is the most popular online payment method in Japan, with bank transfer the next on the list.

When I think of a store with a huge variety of products, it’ll have to be Singapore’s online marketplace Carousell. There, I can get an assortment of my sourcing needs met, be it finding great deals on electronics, browsing and shopping for the bicycle that I want, to looking for repairman services all within the same app.

While perhaps almost everything can be found on Carousell’s diversified marketplace, we are not surprised that Carousell is Singapore’s largest auto marketplace too. In fact, it has leadership positions in categories like cars for sale, vehicle rental, car accessories, workshops, and motorcycles.

U.K. Wants Challengers to Nokia and Ericsson for Mobile Networks

The U.K. and its mobile networks have set a target of 2030 to carry 35% of their data over so-called Open RAN equipment, challenging dominant suppliers Nokia Oyj and Ericsson AB.

While not compulsory, the “ambition” to introduce Open RAN components announced Wednesday could limit the market share of the two Nordic vendors. They stood in line to inherit an effective duopoly after Britain banned their main competitor, China’s Huawei Technologies Co. Ltd, from its next generation 5G wireless networks last year.

Open RAN stands for Open Radio Access Network and is an initiative intended to foster new competition. The Huawei ban exposed Britain’s reliance on a small number of suppliers, causing government ministers to try and diversify the supply chain.

Although Nokia and Ericsson have expressed support for Open RAN, the shift represents a big potential opportunity for startups and the likes of Airspan Inc. and Rakuten Group Inc.’s Altiostar, which sell Open RAN gear, as carriers plan to spend the next decade building 5G networks.

Rakuten Symphony marks independence with edge products launch, more executive hires

Nov 12, 2021 | Daniel Beazer

The portable hardware, dubbed Symware by the trio, is aimed at simplifying 5G cell deployments. It will tackle one of the major problems associated with disaggregated Open RAN deployments, such as how to provide consistent routing across different physical and virtual architectures.

The device will also enable key 5G features such as network slicing and dynamic steering of traffic through segment routing. It also supports automation through zero-touch provisioning and Rakuten says its routing functionality and containerized Distribution Unit will save carriers CAPEX and OPEX when building out 5G networks. The trio(Rakuten, Intel, Juniper) expects the product to ship in the first half of 2022.

Symware marks the debut of Rakuten Symphony as a separate entity from its parent, Rakuten. Rakuten, often called “the Amazon of Japan,” is not as well known as it should be outside its core markets. The company runs a mass-market e-commerce operation, and on top of that operates a mobile network business and is well known for being a 5G pioneer.

Following the split from its parent company, Rakuten Symphony is home to various products from the wide range of acquisitions Rakuten has made in this space in the last few years such as Altiostart, a vRAN provider, and most recently, Estmob, a peer to peer file transfer service. A prominent advocate of Open RAN, Rakuten is hoping to disrupt the current cozy ecosystem of incumbents such as Nokia, Ericsson and Huawei, which will make it an interesting company to follow over the next few years.

To do that, the company has been rapidly expanding its headcount. There are currently 387 employees, compared to 181 at the start of the year, according to data from LinkedIn.

Among the recent hires, Geoff Hollingworth has been hired as CMO for Rakuten Symphony. Hollingworth has had roles at Ericsson, AT&T and most recently was CMO for MobiledgeX.

Picocom introduces the industry’s first 5G NR small cell system on chip designed for Open RAN
Thursday, 09 December 2021 11:57

The PC802 is the world’s first 4G/5G device dedicated to developing small cells with integrated support for Open RAN standards. It supports disaggregated 5G small cell platforms, including indoor residential, enterprise and industrial networks, neutral host networks and outdoor networks.

“The big vendors design their own chips optimised for performance, power and cost. A disruptive Open RAN ecosystem needs innovative chips to compete with this, so it’s good to see Picocom coming to market with optimised, flexible silicon,” stated Rethink Research founder and research director Caroline Gabriel.

In the not-too-distant future: Lower roaming fees to KDDI and increasing revenues through more users in the own infrastructure

With microchip shortages conspiring to slow down the mobile unit’s launch phase, Rakuten booked its third quarterly loss in succession but bullishly stated it expects the ongoing rollout of mobile base stations to improve the segment’s profitability from the Group’s fiscal second quarter in 2022. It notes that if the rollout continues on track, it will soon see the benefit of lower roaming fees to KDDI for using the latter’s network, and a corresponding increase in revenues – particularly data – from users on its own infrastructure.

The dream behind Symware: “Never again will you have to worry about a hardware upgrade. Never again will you have to worry about a generation upgrade.”

Mobile network operators around the world are starting to deploy Open RAN and cloud-native architecture in their networks, which will provide them with greater agility, enable smarter security, and empower them with new levels of automation while broadening and securing their supply chain.
“Symware is radio-as-a-service architecture that we want to deliver to the industry,” announced Tareq Amin, CEO of Rakuten Symphony, onstage at GSMA’s MWC LA conference. “Never again will you have to worry about a hardware upgrade. Never again will you have to worry about a generation upgrade.”
This is because Rakuten Symphony — a Rakuten Group organization with operations across Japan, Singapore, India, EMEA, and the United States that develops and brings to the global marketplace cloud-native, Open RAN telco infrastructure platforms, services and solutions through the Rakuten Communications Platform — will upgrade Symware automatically for customers.

“Rakuten Symphony constantly looks to introduce leading-edge innovations to accelerate network transformations,” shared Amin. “With our partners, we have developed a cost-performance optimized appliance that simplifies the cell site deployment for 4G, 5G and future generations of mobile technology. Symware provides operators with the ultimate future-proof cell site solution that enables them to flexibly densify their network and accommodate various network topologies at the lowest cost.”
