Abstract
July 6, 2021

And as we published our vRAN and open RAN Market report and did 2 webinars on the topic during the week preceding MWC21, we were well prepared to discuss the state of the industry with the players, who like us, decided to have a physical presence at the event. It was fascinating to see how Parallel Wireless took Samsung’s spot facing what used to be Ericsson’s immense booth, now turned into a Telco Cloud City exhibition, in which Mavenir had a mini booth full of compelling demos. Well done, both Mavenir and Parallel Wireless boasted a strategic spot for both customer leads and prospects, and entertainment—Telco Cloud City featured live events every evening, including a Jon Bon Jovi performance. Only Altiostar did not have a booth but was represented by Thierry Maupilé, Chief Strategy & EVP Product Management, who hurried from planned to improvised meetings with CSPs. Make no mistake, Altiostar, Mavenir and Parallel Wireless were remarkably busy and reaped the full benefits of the event. In fact, many CSPs from all over Europe, the Middle East (e.g., Etisalat, STC) and Africa (e.g., pan African player MTN) made a last-minute decision to come to specifically discuss open RAN. Additionally Russia-based MTS showed up.

Rakuten Mobile has shown highly competitive network performance, winning Opensignal awards for upload speed and voice app experiences in Japan

Myth #6: Open RAN doesn’t offer the same performance as legacy architecture

• Traditional networks are designed to work seamlessly.
• Loosely-integrated Open RAN networks add inefficiencies to the network.

Network performance is a key factor for any operator, but choosing Open RAN architecture doesn’t mean sacrificing performance. In fact, many operators have said that Open RAN deployments have met or surpassed their KPIs, and that the use of Open RAN improves performance in metrics such as spectral efficiency and latency. One example of this is Rakuten Mobile’s network in Japan.

In just a year since the full-scale commercial launch, Rakuten Mobile has shown highly competitive network performance, winning Opensignal awards for upload speed and voice app experiences in Japan. These results are with around 1/5 of the spectrum of other carriers. In addition, umlaut’s independent comparison of Rakuten Mobile to global mobile network operators proved that Rakuten’s Open RAN network is outperforming legacy mobile networks in the world’s largest cities, scoring 926 out of a possible 1,000 points in the review.

While the commercial deployment of Open RAN is new, the technologies and the know-how are not. The telecom industry has been discussing and testing these technologies for a long time. Software-centric networks and open disaggregated RAN is future-proof architecture. Rakuten Mobile has leaned into the future and proven that this model works on a commercial scale.

Rakuten Group, Inc., one of the world’s biggest online marketplaces, knows fulfillment and distribution better than most; successfully builds trust with millions of customers every year. If any organization in the world knows the 3PL business deeply, it’s Rakuten Super Logistics (RSL), a company that offers brands cast-iron guarantees for service quality.

The company’s 3PL capabilities are, of course, very much driven by technology, so we were pleased to speak exclusively to Gregg Beall, the Vice President of IT at Rakuten Super Logistics, about how the company operates and what its customers can expect today and in the future.

Azimo’s future growth plan

Daniel Webber Monday, July 5th, 2021

Digital money transfer platform Azimo has published its FY 2020 results, showing year-on-year revenue growth of 32% but increased losses as investment continues in the product and network. I caught up with CEO Richard Ambrose to find out how the company plans to continue its growth.

We expect Azimo to continue its revenue growth in the year to June 2021 at the same rate as 2019-20, with the pandemic helping to pull in customers several years earlier than they otherwise would have naturally switched to being digital users.

Looking to future growth, Richard says that the priority for Azimo is “network, network, network”. As part of this, the company plans to increase both its breadth of coverage and the quality of service in some markets.

This will include the expansion of the platform to new remittance markets, as well as adding new and better partners in key markets over the next six months – key focuses here include Sri Lanka, Morocco, Egypt and Kenya.
On the pay-in side, Azimo plans to make it much easier to send from a bank account, and plans to add open banking capabilities to support this.

Azimo is an example of a focused, financially disciplined fintech. It hasn’t raised the amounts some of its competitors have but it continues to grow, centered on its core.

Philippines operator signs MoU to boost affordable rural cellular broadband access

VAUGHAN O'GRADY
07 JULY 2021

Smart Communications, a leading mobile services provider in the Philippines, and AST SpaceMobile, which is building a space-based cellular broadband network accessible directly by mobile phones, have signed a memorandum of understanding.

AST SpaceMobile is, it says, building the first and only global broadband cellular network in space to operate directly with standard, unmodified mobile devices, based on its extensive IP and patent portfolio.

This collaboration with Smart aims to look into opportunities to offer the SpaceMobile service to Smart’s customers in rural communities, allowing the company to offer affordable broadband cellular access to the unconnected “for the first time ever”, as Abel Avellan, chairman and CEO of AST SpaceMobile puts it.

The combined effort proposed by the companies would look at ways of extending SpaceMobile cellular broadband connectivity to the Philippines mainland along with its islands (there are more than 7,000 across the Philippines) and the surrounding waters.

Once deployed, AST SpaceMobile says its services will eliminate connectivity gaps faced by at least five billion mobile subscribers and bring cellular broadband to approximately half of the world’s population who remain unconnected, in collaboration with major mobile network operators and wireless infrastructure companies, including Vodafone Group, Rakuten and American Tower.

As for when the service will be up and running, AST is planning its first commercial satellite launches for the second half of 2022 or early 2023; these are expected to provide satellite coverage in 49 countries along the Equator with 20 satellites.

AST plans to achieve full global mobile coverage with 110 satellites by the end of 2023 or early in 2024 – and 5G support with a total of 168 satellites by the end of 2024.

An entrepreneurship bootcamp with a twist

07 July 2021

A record 230 budding entrepreneurs, including 100 from ASEAN, are picking up vital skills and building key networks these two weeks at the NUS Enterprise Summer Programme in Entrepreneurship 2021.

Prof Tan noted the key role that NUS Enterprise has played in advancing innovation and entrepreneurship at NUS and beyond. “With extensive resources and networks made available to entrepreneurially-minded students, NUS Enterprise has built an environment that is innovative in outlook and supportive in nature,” he said.

Success stories of NUS-supported enterprises that have gone on to make an impact include Carousell, Shopback and PatSnap.

With almost half of the participants from ASEAN, Prof Tan noted the region’s bright prospects. “In 2020, the estimated total GDP of the ASEAN economies came up to over US$3 trillion, a significant increase from the previous years. Countries and markets within ASEAN can complement each other,” he said.

At the opening session, participants also got to hear from successful entrepreneurs, including Mr Marcus Tan, Co-founder of Carousell. He shared extensively on his journey, fielding questions from the students as well as from Professor Tom Kosnik, Lead Instructor for this Summer Programme. Prof Kosnik was an Adjunct Professor at Stanford University’s School of Engineering, as well as Consulting Professor at NUS Overseas Colleges in Silicon Valley.

Reflecting on his journey in building up Carousell and in expanding the firm regionally, Mr Tan shared that his biggest challenge was in finding the right people with similar values.

“Even as a founder, I was pretty fortunate to have (co-founders) Lucas and Siu Rui. We are similar in terms of motivation, how we wanted to start, what keeps us going, and similar values in terms of what we value in life.”

Mr Tan has had to continue looking out for suitable senior leaders to scale the business, take the company forward, and expand overseas.

Altiostar Congratulates Rakuten Mobile on Global Mobile (GLOMO) Awards Achievement

TEWKSBURY, Mass., July 9, 2021 /PRNewswire/ -- Altiostar today congratulated its partner Rakuten Mobile for winning two 2021 Global Mobile (GLOMO) awards, known as the Oscars of the mobile industry, for its 5G Open RAN on Kubernetes solution at the GSMA Mobile World Congress held in Barcelona last week.

Altiostar congratulated Rakuten Mobile for winning two 2021 Global Mobile (GLOMO) awards at GSMA Mobile World Congress.

Rakuten Mobile won the award for Best Mobile Technology Breakthrough based on its 5G Open RAN on Kubernetes. The network won another honor when a panel of more than 20 CTOs from around the world selected Rakuten Mobile for the CTO Choice: Outstanding Mobile Technology Award.

Altiostar developed the cloud-native, Kubernetes-based Open vRAN software that Rakuten Mobile used to build the network. The network is an industry-first for using cloud native software that converts Open vRAN network elements, including distributed units (DUs) and centralized units (CUs), into containerized applications that are fast to deploy, can be individually upgraded and offer better network scalability.

The resulting 5G network has dramatically improved economics, deployability and scalability, with the operator detailing up to 40% reduction in capital expenditure (CAPEX) and up to 30% decrease in operating expenditure (OPEX) compared to a traditional network deployment.

MWC 2021 - the OpenRAN journey, from concept to deployments

Published by Peter Whale on 1 Jul 2021

Last modified 1 Jul 2021

So how are we doing in terms of commercial scale roll-outs? The message is that Open RAN has left the labs and is now rolling out commercially. Vodafone is moving from trials to first commercial deployments, initially in the UK, with 2,500 sites. Sushil Rawat from Rakuten Mobile spoke of having deployed 15,000 4G base stations with Open RAN and an initial 1,000 with 5G, using a disaggregated software and hardware solution. Telefonica has been running extensive trials for the past three years, and is preparing for rollout with scale from 2022 onwards.

Finally our panellists were asked how Open RAN makes the world a better place. Open RAN is a key capability enabler to be able to reach more people more efficiently who need access to communication services, extending coverage and reach - and so reducing the scale of the digital divide and democratising access to the Internet.

Telecom Egypt will also test Altiostar’s Open vRAN common software platform

As part of the trial, Telecom Egypt will use an Evenstar radio unit in its initial OpenRAN deployment. Evenstar is a program focused on accelerating OpenRAN adoption by building general-purpose OpenRAN reference architecture for 4G and 5G networks. By decoupling the radio unit (RU) hardware, distributed unit (DU), and control unit (CU) software of the RAN, which are traditionally sold as a package, Evenstar provides operators like Telecom Egypt with the flexibility to deploy solutions from an increasing number of technology providers, while expanding its network coverage in Egypt.

Additionally, Telecom Egypt will test Cisco’s Edge Computing Technology and Cisco’s fronthaul transport solution for the OpenRAN cell sites. This will provide validation of a complete, end-to-end OpenRAN network. Telecom Egypt will also test Altiostar’s Open vRAN common software platform for the DU and CU functions.
