"Das Wachstum im Pandemiejahr war vergleichsweise schwach."

Das kann ich angesichts der folgenden Zahlen absolut nicht nachvollziehen:

Domestic E-Commerce GMS (GMS comprises Ichiba, Travel GTV on checkout basis, Books, Golf, Fashion, Dream businesses, Beauty, Delivery, Rakuten24 (Direct), Auto business, Rakuma, Rebates
Rakuten Seiyu Netsuper, etc.) in Q4/20 was with 1409,9 billion JPY  about 38.5% higher than in Q4/19 with 1017,9 billion JPY.

Domestic E-Commerce Results (Domestic E-Commerce = Ichiba, Travel, Books, Golf, Rakuten Fashion, Dream businesses, Beauty, Delivery, Rakuten24 (Direct), Logistics, Auto business, Rakuma, Rebates, etc): Revenue strongly grew at +35.1% YoY.  Accordingly, operating income growth strongly increased at +70.3% YoY even under logistics-related investments.

im letzten Conference Call:

"In the new normal, the fusion of off-line and online is progressing, and digitalization is accelerating. At e-commerce, it's only ¥20 trillion of a total ¥300 trillion of household consumption in Japan. We expect further growth and Rakuten continued to grow faster than the market.

Here is the total amount of domestic e-commerce GMS in the fourth quarter and 2020. Growth has accelerated significantly as consumer behavior has changed. Here is the revenue and operating income. Led by Rakuten Ichiba, many businesses performed well, and operating income also increased significantly.

Looking more closely at operating income, the marketplace type businesses centralized on Rakuten Ichiba and Rakuten Travel improved significantly. "

It seems like Rakuten Mobile is up for the challenge

Enter Rakuten, the latest player in the Japanese mobile market. Rakuten Mobile launched in April 2020 and less than a year later, on 9 March 2021, reported having more than 3 million applications for its Un-Limit mobile service (see Insight Report: Rakuten Could Form a Template for Future Mobile Launches). It’s still a relatively minor player, though, dwarfed by NTT Docomo with its 82 million subscribers, KDDI with 60 million and SoftBank with 47 million.

Entering such a mature market isn’t an easy task, but it seems like Rakuten is up for the challenge. It recently announced plans to introduce a new service with a simplified fee structure aligned with customers’ data usage. Starting from 1 April, customers will be charged ¥980 ($9.50) per month for using 1GB to 3GB, increasing to ¥1,980 ($19) for 3GB to 20GB, and to ¥2,980 ($29) for using more than 20GB. Subscribers who use less than 1GB per month will be able to do so free of charge.

Federal Communications Commission and Open RAN

The FCC on Wednesday opened a formal discussion on open RAN, seeking input for a comprehensive record on the state of the technology, benefits and challenges, and how federal policies could help foster development.

At the open meeting, FCC commissioners unanimously supported adoption of a Notice of Inquiry (NOI) introduced by Acting Chairwoman Jessica Rosenworcel in February.

Part of the FCC’s focus on open RAN has to do with security and U.S. leadership in 5G. It’s interested in leveraging the technology to find alternatives to Chinese vendors Huawei and ZTE, which have been designated as national security risks. The agency also is looking at how it can help address supply chain challenges and support newer entrants, as there aren’t any U.S. vendors among the major network infrastructure suppliers.

During the FCC meeting, Rosenworcel noted there are four main mobile network equipment vendors to choose from, none of which are from the U.S.

Ericsson, Huawei, and Nokia, are the dominant RAN vendors globally, with Samsung making inroads in key markets, particularly the U.S.

“But if we can unlock the RAN and diversify the equipment in this part of our networks, we may be able to increase security, reduce our exposure to any single foreign vendor, lower costs, and push the equipment market to where the United States is uniquely skilled—in software,” Rosenworcel continued.

U.S. software vendors like Altiostar, Mavenir, Parallel Wireless, and others, are among relative newer players in the RAN space that have championed and gained attention for open RAN. Dish Network in the U.S. plans to build a 5G network using open and virtualized RAN architecture. Operators abroad like Telefonica, Vodafone have been pushing trials and interest in open RAN, as well as Japan’s Rakuten Mobile.

Asian Content Streamer Rakuten Viki Adds Transactional VOD in North America (EXCLUSIVE)

Patrick Frater
Mon, March 22, 2021, 2:00 PM·2 min read

Rakuten Viki, a streaming platform specializing in Asian content and fan-generated sub-titles, is launching a transactional VOD function in North America. The new functionality kicks off with two recent Korean movies, “Josee” and “New Year Blues.”

Backed by Japanese e-commerce and entertainment group Rakuten, Viki currently operates an ad-supported video service (AVOD) and two tiers of subscription video (SVOD). The TVOD component will allow the company to offer content with yet shorter windows. “

The TVOD option is priced at $4.99 or lower. It is available via desktop browser, Roku, Amazon Firestick, Apple TV Plus, Android TV, Chromecast, and on mobile devices.

“Rakuten Viki aims to bring some of the hottest Asian movies and dramas to fans within days after their debut in Asia. With the launch of TVoD, fans can quickly and easily access highly anticipated films like ‘Josee,’ that they can then watch anytime, anywhere and at their own convenience. It’s also a way to watch in-demand, exclusive content that isn’t too hard on the wallet,” said the company’s senior VP of content and partnerships, Sarah Kim.

Founded back in 2007 with start-up funding from Singapore’s Neoteny Labs, Viki was a pioneer of Asian streaming. It was acquired by Rakuten in 2015 and itself acquired Asian pop culture fan site Soompi in 2015.

Today Rakuten Viki claims more than 1,700 TV shows and movies from Korea, Japan, mainland China, Taiwan and Thailand that are accessible for free or through the different subscription tiers, and 55 million users. It has been involved in original content including “Dramaworld.” Fans and enthusiasts have added sub-titles in approximately 150 languages.

TVoD, SVoD & AVoD: Hier liegen die Unterschiede

SVoD bedeutet "Subscription-Video-on-Demand".

„With 40.28 million regular users and a 20.1% share of the market, Rakuten Ichiba is the second biggest online marketplace in Japan. In comparison, the market leader Amazon is only slightly ahead of Rakuten with its 40.79 million users and 20.2% market share.

https://globaleyez.net/bye-bye-rakutende/

Meet the “Gigfluencer,” a new generation of influencer for the work-from-anywhere era

The global pandemic hasn’t just changed the way we shop, study and spend our free time. For many social-savvy content creators, it’s changed the way we “influence” as well. As businesses and organizations rapidly digitize toward a new “work from anywhere” world, a generation of first-time influencers who don’t fit the mold of typical social media stars are emerging online.

Meet the the “Gigfluencer”

ShopStyle Collective — an influencer marketing network that powers over 30,000 influencers who monetize their content across blogs and social channels, and deliver upon brands’ marketing objectives — recently released an analysis of their December 2020 survey of 350 influencers who began monetizing content before and after the pandemic. The analysis points out trends surrounding influencer interest segments, long-term ambitions, motivators, top challenges and performance metrics — and notably, it identifies a new category of job-juggling social influencers, known as “Gigfluencers.”

According to ShopStyle, a Gigfluencer is a U.S.-based influencer — often focused on the retail category (apparel, footwear, beauty and sportswear) — who began monetizing their content for the first time (or re-attempted to monetize their content) around the start of the COVID-19 pandemic lockdown. True to their name, Gigfluencers are more likely to be monetizing their content as a side gig or “side hustle” during the pandemic, viewing their content creation work as a source of supplemental, non-primary income.

How ShopStyle’s new Pay Per Click service empowers influencers

To help this ambitious new wave of content creators build momentum, ShopStyle Collective has launched a new Pay Per Click (PPC) feature.

With PPC, ShopStyle Collective’s network of influencers, including Gigfluencers, are rewarded for clicks on their affiliate links. PPC allows influencers to generate revenue out of the gate while building their following and serves as a way for influencers to grow legitimately.

ShopStyle Collective is going the extra mile to make this a safer bet for brand partners, as brands will still only pay for performance and conversion. This aids in the growth of strong partnerships being formed with Gigfluencers and helps pave the way for them to heighten their digital presence.

ShopStyle Collective and the PPC service now being offered can unlock new opportunities for individuals to establish their brand online, opening the influencer world to more storytellers from all walks of life – even amid these unprecedented times.

Altiostar and Rakuten Mobile Demonstrate Success Across Performance and Scalability for Open RAN Network

Nationwide Network in Japan built on Altiostar cloud-native Open vRAN software achieves superior levels of automation and performance

TEWKSBURY, Mass. and TOKYO , March 24, 2021 /PRNewswire/ -- Altiostar and Rakuten Mobile, Inc. today announced a number of performance and scalability achievements for the Rakuten Mobile 4G and 5G Open RAN deployments, highlighted with innovation around virtualization, automation and performance.

Rakuten Mobile built and launched its 4G network in record time in April 2020 . As of March 2021 , the network has 3 million applicants. As of the end of January 2021, the network has more than 11,000 base stations that cover 74.9% of the population. 1 Rakuten Mobile's goal is 96% population coverage by Summer 2021, which is around five years ahead of its own schedule. The network has achieved both high performance (number one in upload speed in market at 16.8Mbps, per OpenSignal ), despite having only 1/6th of the spectrum holdings of competing operators in market.

In September 2020 , only five months after the initial launch, Rakuten Mobile was the first operator to launch a commercial-scale, cloud-native 5G network, leveraging Altiostar's open virtualized radio access network (Open vRAN) solution. Because baseband functions are deployed as Virtual Network Functions (VNFs), it has been possible for Rakuten Mobile to automate various operational tasks such as new cell site integration (auto-commissioning), as well as fault detection and automated recovery from failures (self-healing), further minimizing its Opex. As an example, due to the automation of its network, Rakuten Mobile has stated it can provision a new 5G cell site in just four minutes and a 4G site in eight minutes.

The 5G network, leveraging advanced massive MIMO and millimeter wave (mmWave) radios, covers both sub-6 GHz and mmWave frequency bands. Altiostar worked closely with Qualcomm Technologies, Inc., Airspan, and Rakuten Mobile on innovation in mmWave radios based on Qualcomm® 5G RAN platforms, with the disaggregation of hardware and software designed to deliver a much better quality of experience, allowing the network to dynamically reallocate resources on the fly. Altiostar collaborated with NEC and Rakuten Mobile to introduce to the 5G network the sub-6 GHz massive MIMO radios, which were validated as compliant with O-RAN specifications during an O-RAN Alliance Plugfest held in September 2020 in India .

The 5G network has demonstrated impressive performance for end users, with throughput of 1.77 Gbps. This compares favorably to data from a Ookla , which detailed speed test results for Japan in Q3 2020, where the fastest 10% of users realized an average download speed of 719.42 Mbps.

"Rakuten has been a disruptor in the mobile space and our 4G and 5G Open vRAN deployments reflect this strategy," said Tareq Amin , Representative Director, Executive Vice President and Chief Technology Officer at Rakuten Mobile. "The performance and stability of the 5G network shows that a cloud-native framework and web-scale architecture can compete with a traditional RAN approach and provide new levels of automation to the network. We will continue to drive the transformation of the mobile industry with a rich and diverse ecosystem with companies including Altiostar, Qualcomm Technologies and NEC."

"Rakuten has been at the forefront of the Open vRAN movement since it began. The industry is closely watching its every step, and it has been able to demonstrate a high-quality experience for their customers," said Stéphane Teral, Chief Analyst, LightCounting. "This is validated by the performance metrics of their 5G network and I am excited to see the next steps they take as the network goes national."

"This is a significant milestone for the Rakuten Mobile and Altiostar partnership towards commercial realization of a high performing, cloud-native 5G RAN architecture," said Ashraf Dahod , CEO of Altiostar. "The Altiostar container-based solution allows Rakuten Mobile to quickly provision new sites and turn up service for a customer in record time. By leveraging the power of an Open virtualized RAN, Rakuten can transform its network and its business to provide a robust service for the consumer that exceeds that of a traditional operator."

Altiostar has partnered with Rakuten Mobile to design and deploy at scale the first Open vRAN in the world. Rakuten Mobile has standardized on the Altiostar Open vRAN software for all types of deployment models from small cells to macro to massive MIMO, across 4G and 5G radio access technologies.

Total value of this membership (lifetime value minus customer acquisition costs) was 7.8 trillion yen (almost US$75 billion) at the end of the third quarter of 2020.

New technologies, together with a supportive policy agenda and more flexible spectrum licenses, are lowering the barriers to entry in telecoms, while cutting the cost of connectivity. These trends could give rise to a new kind of telco, as exemplified by Rakuten Mobile in Japan and Reliance Jio in India. Although global internet platforms, such as Google and Amazon, are unlikely to expand deeper into consumer connectivity and risk a backlash from partners and regulators, smaller digital commerce players could enter this market as they push for an advantage in economies of scope against the economies of scale of the internet giants.

Rakuten’s push into mobile telecoms is part of a broader strategy to build deeper data-driven relationship with consumers in Japan: the chart above shows the central position of mobile connectivity within the large ecosystem of services it offers its customers. At the heart of the company’s strategy is a reward programme, which encourages consumers to use its shopping, content, and online banking products. As consumers use the same ID across 43 different services, Rakuten can award them loyalty points each time they buy something within the ecosystem. Presenting its financial results in November 2020, Rakuten Mobile estimated the total value of this membership (lifetime value minus customer acquisition costs) was 7.8 trillion yen (almost US$75 billion) at the end of the third quarter of 2020.

Rakuten’s focus on maximising customer lifetime value across a broad portfolio of services points to how telcos could build deeper and more valuable relationships with consumers.

The three layers of Rakuten Communications Platform

Sean Kinney, Editor in Chief
MARCH 22, 2021

Last week Rakuten Communications Platform (RCP) tapped Airspan as a 4G and 5G hardware/software vendor, and this week RCP announced it’s working with Abu Dhabi-based Etisalat to develop a “reference design” for cloud-native, Open RAN networks.

Etisalat Group provides network services to almost 150 million people in 16 countries in the Middle East, Asia and Africa.

Azita Arvani, general manager of Rakuten Mobile Americas, participated in RCR Wireless News’ recent 5G Transformation Forum; she characterized RCP as having three general layers.

“In the journey we’ve had in our cloud-native Open RAN architecture, a lot of operators have asked us, ‘We want to do [a]similar thing to what you do. Can you help us?’ We have created this platform that’s really based on all the experiences we’ve had in the last two, two-and-a-half years.”

She continued: “The bottom layer is the unified telco layer and it’s based on the most advanced cloud technology, based on Kubernetes, and hardened for telco-grade requirements. That goes across the different layers of cloud that you might have in your network. On top of that sits our network function layer and that’s where you take advantage of your open architecture…You bring in this multi-vendor aspect, you bring in the best-in-breed for various network functions you want, whether it be for virtual baseband or virtual core, virtual RCS, etc…And we onboard these in a way that makes it part of a holistic system rather than just stitching together a bunch of point solutions. And on top of that is an overarching what we call intelligent and secure operations and that is where we take advantage of the automation. That continuously improves. These three layers together is what RCP is made up of. Depending on the operator we talk to, you can take the entire RCP or pieces of it.”

Rakuten finds success through disruptive thinking and actions

The need for a new network model The current, typical model for building a mobile network is outdated. Operators are constrained by legacy vendor architectures that have remained essentially unchanged for more than 25 years of mobile networks. Although these architectures were useful in prior generations, they aren’t suited for today’s more dynamic, application-driven environment. Operators urgently need a new model to ensure they remain competitive delivering new services faster, while decreasing both capital and operating expenses.
