ll help us move to the next step of a truly virtualized network.”NEC and Analog Devices Collaborate to Provide 5G O-RAN Massive MIMO Radio for Rakuten Mobile
POSTED BY TWEBT POSTED ON NOVEMBER 26, 2020

NEC Corporation (NEC; TSE: 6701) and Analog Devices, Inc. (Nasdaq: ADI) announced today that they have teamed up to design a 5G Network Massive MIMO Antenna Radio Unit for Rakuten Mobile. The radio unit adopts ADI’s fourth-generation wideband RF transceiver solution to achieve high precision Massive MIMO and possesses a 5G open vRAN (virtual RAN) interface corresponding to Rakuten Mobile’s end-to-end fully virtualized cloud-native mobile network. It delivers large capacity transmission with high efficiency by using 3.7GHz frequency Massive MIMO*1 and digital beamforming technology.*2 The cloud-native virtual network heralds a major shift in how communications providers can offer high-speed internet access worldwide, at significantly lower costs, made possible without the maintenance, upkeep, repair and labor costs associated with the physical infrastructure that hinders conventional networks. NEC has already started shipping the 5G Network Massive MIMO Antenna Radio Unit to Rakuten Mobile.

ADI’s fourth-generation wideband RF transceiver integrates quad channel transmitters, receivers and Digital Pre-Distortion (DPD) in a single chip. The radio is fully software reconfigurable and covers all sub-6GHz 5G frequency bands, simplifying radio designs.

“The new wave of 5G-based network connectivity is defined by flexibility,” said Greg Henderson, Senior Vice President at Analog Devices. “By working with NEC to drive the first Massive MIMO installation for Rakuten Mobile, we’re laying the groundwork to propel 5G connectivity forward. The ecosystem is incredibly intricate and complex, but the primary goal is for all parties to work seamlessly together to inspire efficiencies across the board: cost, time and capital equipment. These are the pieces that incredibly intricate and complex, but the primary goal is for all parties to work seamlessly together to inspire efficiencies across the board: cost, time and capital equipment. These are the pieces that will help us move to the next step of a truly virtualized network.”

Rakuten Mobile tries to woo customers with more price cuts

As part of what it called the "Zero Declaration," a new marketing initiative designed to reduce financial and bureaucratic "burdens" on customers, Japan's disruptive mobile network operator (MNO) pulled the plug on contract sign-up fees and charges for number portability.

Rakuten Mobile was once again quick to claim it had much more leeway to reduce retail prices than traditional MNOs, courtesy of its "fully virtualized cloud native mobile network."

The Japanese mobile operator is no stranger to aggressive pricing. Monthly charges for its 4G service, launched in April, are pitched as 67% cheaper than equivalent services from rivals.

Rakuten Mobile's 5G service launched in September, dubbed Un-Limit V (it includes unlimited data), is priced the same as 4G and is apparently 71% cheaper than comparable offers (although Rakuten 5G coverage is still fairly limited).

Following the Zero Declaration unveiling, the Un-Limit V service plan was updated to Rakuten Un Limit V 2.0.

By the end of March next year, Rakuten Mobile aims to have 5G launched in every prefecture. The aim the following quarter is to switch from a Cisco 4G core to an NEC 5G one, supporting standalone 5G.

Japan To Assist India With 5G Technology To Counter China’s Mounting Dominance

November 30, 2020

Amid rising security concerns from Chinese technology, India and Japan will be cooperating on the telecommunications and digital infrastructure front to counter Beijing, Japanese officials have told Nikkei Asia.

Japanese Internal Affairs and Communications Minister Ryota Takeda and India’s IT and Telecommunications minister Ravi Shankar Prasad will sign a comprehensive agreement on information and communication, which involves projects worth hundreds of millions of dollars, at a virtual meeting in December.

According to media reports, Rakuten, one of Japan’s electronic commerce and online retailing companies, is planning to export a cloud-based mobile network that will reduce the cost of installation and operation. The company has already opened a laboratory in the southern Indian city of Bengaluru to sell the technology to local carriers.

How the UK government wants to encourage network supplier diversity

By Keith Dyer 2 December 2020

The UK Government is opening up a multi-pronged strategy to try to wean the UK’s telecoms operators off their enforced reliance on Nokia and Ericsson as Radio Access Network (RAN) equipment suppliers.
As it does so, it will  support Open RAN as one of the chief, but not only, means of achieving its goal of having a more resilient, secure and diverse supplier community for MNOs operating in the UK.

Scott Bailey, Head of Telecoms Diversification at the DCMS, told a webinar organised by lobby group the Open RAN Policy Coalition,  “Open RAN is really the cornerstone for us of a vibrant competitive market in international telecoms.”

But it is NEC that is make the most noise in this area. The vendor is working to implement and demonstrate a ‘neutral host’ Open RAN solution across a range of deployment environments, to be known as the NeutrORAN Trial.

This project opens in 2021, is backed by a UK government investment of £1.6m, and forms part of the wider 5G Testbeds and Trials Programme.

You've no doubt seen the commercials for this online and app-based service that gives people cash back when they make a purchase using the Rakuten app. Formerly Ebates, this app is fairly simple to use. Simply go to the app or the online site (you can download a web browser extension to use it via laptop, also), search through the variety of offers, and click through the one that you'd like to shop. For example, I opened the Rakuten app, clicked on the Walmart offer, which took me to the Walmart site, shopped, and checked out like normal, and it was all recorded within Rakuten. This service is definitely worthwhile if you shop online often—really, you can find an offer for almost any place you might want to shop.

Japanese ecommerce giant Rakuten has a plan to conquer the telecom industry

By Matilda Coleman December 2, 2020

Tokyo-based Rakuten started off in 1997 as an online marketplace but has since sprawled in Amazon-like fashion, moving successfully into fields like travel, payment and banking. But when its chief executive Mickey Mikitani told his CEO friends that he planned to take Rakuten into the telecom industry, they warned him we would fail.

The business is brutally competitive, Mikitani’s friends told him, and requires vast amounts of capital. Nonetheless, Rakuten believes it’s found a way to overcome these formidable obstacles.

Speaking at ‘s digital Brainstorm Finance conference, Mikitani explained that gaining a foothold in the phone and telecom market requires three huge upfront costs: capital infrastructure, spectrum and customer acquisition.

Rakuten, however, has been able to enter the market with less than half of the capital investment that is typically required, Mikitani said. It has managed to pull this off by using software rather hardware to build out many aspects of its network. Meanwhile, it has been able to acquire a large number of customers by leveraging its existing business strategy, which touts Rakuten as a membership company rather than as simply an ecommerce forum.

Mikitani added that anticipates Rakuten will be able to further decrease its costs by “virtualizing, automating and using AI here and there.”

If its telecom gambit succeeds, Rakuten will have conquered another difficult industry after already becoming Japan’s biggest player in the fields of fintech and credit cards.

SAN FRANCISCO, Dec. 3, 2020 /PRNewswire/ -- Rakuten Inc. has completed the acquisition of Fillr, the world's most intelligent autofill service. Based in Melbourne, Australia, Fillr powers tens of millions of transactions monthly for the world's top e-commerce, fintech and 'buy now, pay later apps, including for Rakuten's shopping rewards and Cash Back destination in the United States and Canada. Terms of the acquisition, led by Rakuten Americas on behalf of Rakuten Inc., were not disclosed.

The Fillr autofill platform grows shopper conversion rates by simplifying registration and checkout processes. When shoppers were offered autofill functionality with Fillr integrations instead of manual typing, they were up to 120 percent more likely to convert and average revenue per user increased by nearly 20 percent.

Fillr's platform also makes it simple to enroll in buy now, pay later payment services by auto-populating virtual credit cards issued by buy now, pay later providers at checkout.

"Accelerating checkout with autofill presents tremendous opportunities for digital retailers and financial services to grow their conversion rates and overall revenue," said Amit Patel, CEO, Rakuten Americas. "Requiring shoppers to fill out a form at the end of a transaction is a distraction that can get in the way of completing a sale. Collaborating with Fillr will allow us to offer solutions to our merchant partners that eliminate unnecessary steps for consumers throughout the full transaction funnel."

About Fillr
Fillr enables customers to have a seamless checkout experience everywhere. Fillr's 'autofill as a service' seamlessly integrates into mobile apps, enabling customers to transact faster and boosting conversions and revenue. The world’s most intelligent and accurate autofill

If we look at our mobile shopping journey, which usually starts with a prompt via a shopping app or social media, there is a solution that could help the internet deliver on its promise of convenience and that is: intelligent autofill.

Right now, convenience is only partially or sporadically available to us: either where we’ve previously shopped at a given retailer and they have our details, or where our browser autofills our details (not a great solution, given that browser autofills are only 53% accurate at most).

But that could all change if social media sites or shopping apps invested in intelligent autofill, like that available from Fillr. If they did, convenience could make a swift return - with Fillr, we could checkout up to 37 times faster (with 98% accuracy). Essentially ‘instant checkout’ anywhere and everywhere!
Intelligent autofill...the missing piece

Most of us are incredibly thankful for all of the benefits that online shopping has brought to our lives. Convenience, though, is a big part of that so it’s high time that intelligent autofill made its debut.

Fillr has developed ‘Autofill as a Service’, the world’s most intelligent and accurate autofill that seamlessly integrates into your app. Contact us today to find out how our technology can help your customers to transact faster and more effectively across millions of merchants sites, boosting your conversions and revenue. Fillr is powering transactions on the world's top ecommerce and meta search apps, software platforms and phone manufacturers.

In what seems to have strong echoes of a recent agreement between Rakuten Mobile and Telefónica, Japan's disruptive mobile network operator has entered into an MoU with Saudi Arabia's STC.
As with Telefónica, STC is tapping into Rakuten Mobile's expertise in bringing different vendors together to install virtualized networks in an "open" environment.

It's not a one-way street. According to the official statement, the two companies "will explore future opportunities to collaborate in various technology domains."

Collaboration work includes development of a "fully autonomous digital platform," as well as looking at different open RAN deployment options for greenfield and brownfield use cases.

Rakuten Mobile has made no secret of its desire to share abroad what it's learned about domestic deployment of its Rakuten Communications Platform (RCP).

"We are more than willing and open to collaborate and partner to make this platform even much better than it is today," said Tareq Amin, Rakuten Mobile's CTO, in a recent conference call with European journalists.
