Obducat shows its technology to solar cell producers at
exhibition in the United States
For the first time Obducat will take part in an exhibition for solar cell technology.
Obducat exhibits at Intersolar North America, presenting among other things its new
lithography system Sindre400. The efficiency of solar cells can be improved by the use
of Obducat’s nanotechnology, hence allowing more energy to be extracted from each
cell.
Intersolar, USA’s largest trade show for solar technology, takes place in San Francisco on 14-16 July.
Obducat will be presenting its new lithography system, which makes the extraction of energy from solar
cells more efficient. Obducat’s nanoimprint lithography is employed to print small structures on the
surfaces of the solar cell. The structures enlarge the surface of the solar cell, thereby increasing its
efficiency.
– Intersolar is attended by large, well-established electronics companies as well as new, emerging
small companies targeting the market niche of solar cell technology. We want to demonstrate the
advantages of our technology for them and their products, says Patrik Lundström, CEO,
Obducat.
The development of greentech, with increased focus on renewable energy production and lower
emissions, has increased the interest in solar cell technology. Obducat’s customers in the research world
have during the past four years used nanoimprint lithography to improve the extraction of energy from
solar cells. Now industrial players are also beginning to show interest.
– Most companies today are focusing on economising on the earth’s natural resources, and the
growing greentech area means big opportunities for Obducat in the future. The more energy that
can be utilised from a given source, the better for the environment, says Patrik Lundström.
Intersolar North America is on for three days, 14-16 July 2009, featuring 500 exhibitors showing their
products. The exhibition is expected to attract 15 000 visitors. Learn more about Intersolar North

LED backlight penetration rate to surpass CCFL in 2014, says DisplaySearch
Latest news
DIGITIMES Research - quarterly shipments data

Press release, July 31; Yvonne Yu, DIGITIMES [Friday 31 July 2009]
The LED backlight market has rapidly emerged in the TFT-LCD industry and is expected to continue growing for the next five years, according to DisplaySearch. Specifically, DisplaySearch forecasts the penetration rate of LED backlights for LCD TVs to grow from less than 3% in 2009 to 40% in 2013 and surpass CCFL backlights in 2014 with more than a 50% penetration rate.
Meanwhile, large-size LED backlight shipments for all applications will grow from 84.9 million units in 2009 to 434.8 million units in 2013, when LED backlights will be used in 54.3% of 10-inch and larger TFT-LCD panels. Thus, LED backlights will become mainstream in the TFT-LCD industry.
While LED backlights for LCD TVs are growing rapidly, notebook PCs are the leading application for large-size LED backlight units, and DisplaySearch forecasts that 100% of all new notebook models will have LED backlights by 2012.
Backlight units (BLUs) for LCD TV are expected to be the next growth opportunity for the LED industry, with leading brands such as Samsung, LG, Sharp and Philips all expected to mass produce LED backlit LCD TVs in 2010. As a result, LED BLUs for TVs will grow to 3.6 million units in 2009 and 15.1 million units in 2010.
Companies like Samsung are focusing on the development of edge-type LED backlights, which can reduce the bill of materials by 30-40% compared to direct-type models. "Edge-type LED backlight units for LCD TV are a temporary solution to drive costs down to open market acceptance for LED TV as short-term marketing strategy," noted Luke Yao, DisplaySearch research director. "Consumers want a low-cost solution with acceptable picture quality, but aren't always willing to pay a higher premium - making edge-type LEDs an ideal near-term solution."
For the monitor segment, cost and performance remain bottlenecks for panel manufacturers creating LED backlit monitors. Taiwan-based panel makers like AU Optronics (AUO) and Innolux Display have been the most aggressive in developing LED monitor panels. Because LED monitor panel sizes (18.5-inch widescreen, 21.5-inch widescreen, 23.6-inch widescreen and 24-inch widescreen) are also used for TV, DisplaySearch updated its forecasted penetration rate for LED monitor backlight units to 21% in 2013. Currently panel makers are putting efforts into shrinking the LED backlight premium to US$3-5 for 18.5-inch widescreen panels. From 2010, we expect that LED backlight monitors will be developed and supported by brand name makers.

Hallo Leute, kann mir bitte jemand sagen was obducat genau treibt und weshalb der Kurs so gefallen ist? Vor einigen Monaten schrieben einige "Kurs 1 €" etc..... sind die insolvent oder was ist denn da los?

In August, Obducat landed its first order in Russia when the Russian Academy of Sciences ordered a NIL system for use in research and development in nanoelectronics and photonics. Obducat now continues to create a distinctive image of itself by both exhibiting and speaking at ICMNE, International Conference Micro and Nanoelectronics, in Moscow on 5-9 October.
- This is a way of establishing contacts on a market where the technology development is still in an early stage. If we can take part and contribute to that development, we will be included when the research turns into production, says Patrik Lundström, CEO, Obducat AB.
The past few years have seen an increasing interest in nanotechnology in Russia. In 2007 RUSNANO, Russian Corporation of Nanotechnologies, was formed in order to support the development of nanotechnology-based industry. The Russian Government has provided funds in order to enable development of new technology and new products such as solar cells and LED.
ICMNE, targeting primarily the research community, is held every second year. This year's conference is focusing on the latest advances in micro and nanoelectronics. Obducat has been invited to speak about the opportunities of mass production of nanoimprint lithography from an industrial point of view.
- Russia is investing in areas where our technology is far advanced. Should their research be conducted by means of our technology, it would offer us a great advantage compared to our competitors, says Patrik Lundström.

“Our post-crisis economy should be based on knowledge and innovative technologies, not on Russia’s natural resources, as boundless as they may be,” Medvedev said in a speech broadcast on state television today.
Medvedev said that Russia has the world’s largest state fund dedicated to developing nanotechnology, the study of extremely tiny materials or devices with applications in medicine, energy and electronics. Russia’s nanotech industry is projected to have sales of 900 billion rubles by 2015, he said.
“We want to become a leader in this process. We have the intellectual potential, the organizational possibilities and the financial possibilities,” Medvedev said.
Private business is “extremely inert” in investing in the new technology, Medvedev said, adding that the legal framework is sufficient after Russia’s post-communist chaos of the nineties. Just waiting until commodity prices recover and then sitting back would be “disastrous” for the economy, he said.
Russia’s competitive advantages in developing nanotech are its educational system, large domestic demand and government support, Medvedev said.
