Noventa exploration work finds Marropino ore body extends further than previously known
Monday, January 17, 2011 by Andre Lamberti
Noventa (LON:NVTA,TSX:NTA) said ongoing geological studies at its flagship Marropino tantalum mine in Mozambique have found that the currently mined main pegmatite ore body extends further than previously known.
The ore body extends along strike for an estimated further 550 metres to the North East with a width of between 60 and 80 metres.
The group said in a statement that this extension is particularly hard to distinguish; half of the area is covered with tailings dump material from the mine, the rest is covered with bush and deeply weathered material.
The pegmatite in question was noted in geological reports produced by East German geologists in 1984 but was not evaluated at that time. The extent of the tantalite mineralisation and the distribution and grade of tantalite in relation to the known zones of the main pegmatite will be tested by a diamond drilling programme, with results expected in March.
Noventa also announced it will start more exploration work this month on the Marropino South deposit, with results expected to be available during the second quarter of 2011.
The group had flagged in November 2010 that more work was required on the deposit in order to get a more accurate analysis after initial sampling returned mixed results.
It said today that during further and more geographically dense pit sampling at Marropino South, it became apparent that the tantalum mineralisation that had been detected previously - which appears to be characterised by localised high grade pockets - is not related to the currently mined main Marropino pegmatite ore body.
GPS mapping has found a 700 metre long pegmatite outcrop, covering an estimated area of about 7.4 hectares. The pegmatite is striking North - South and is in parts up to 100 metres wide. The width and depth of the pegmatite and the grade of the tantalite mineralisation contained therein and its distribution within the pegmatite has not yet been defined.
The existence of this pegmatite was not previously known to current management but following extensive research, it was discovered that it was noted in geological reports produced by East German geologists in 1984; however no work was undertaken at that time.
Bulk samples of about 200 kilograms from the latest pit sampling work are now being extracted from the pit walls and being treated in a new pilot scale processing plant to produce concentrates for further analysis at an independent laboratory and the complete results of the sampling will be announced in due course.

Increase in capital expenditure
Following additional design work as the planning of the upgrade has progressed to the detailed design stage, the forecast capital expenditure for the new processing plant at Marropino has increased from $20 million to $28 million. Due to the current spot price of Ta2O5 having increased from $32/lb at the start of 2010 to over $100/lb now, the Company has decided to increase the capacity of the plant from 500,000lbs per annum to over 600,000lbs per annum. In order to meet these enhanced targets, higher recoveries are required from the plant and the enlarged capital expenditure envisaged is due to a number of items essential to maximise recoveries and therefore enhance shareholder value.

Tantalum concentrate from Global Advanced Metals Wodgina and Greenbushes operations is set to come into the market in late June-early July, the company's chief executive Bryan Ellis told Metal-Pages this week.
The company (formerly Talison) on Monday announced that it is restarting mining at Wodgina, the world's largest tantalum mine, and ore will be processed at GAM's Greenbushes operation. The restart at 700000 lbs of contained Ta2O5 - half of Wodgina's 1.4 million tpy production capacity - was enabled by GAM signing long term contracts with customers at a sustainable price for a significant portion of its production.
The contracts are expected to become the market's new benchmark, and between now and GAM's ramp up to production the spot market is expected to continue rising.
German processor H.C. Starck has declined to comment on the restart of GAM's operations. It is also not commenting on the status of its long-term relationship with Gippsland, whose delayed Abu Dabbab project in Egypt had been expected to become Starck's new raw material source in the coming years.
...
Ellis said that over the past year tantalum inventories in the industry as a whole have been reduced rapidly, and the stocks that remain are unevenly distributed among consumers.
"The market in general does not want to see material from the DRC stop, but people want to see the issue of conflict minerals an illegal type material resolved. The DRC is a fragmented industry and the market is controlled by traders, and consumers want traceability. Over the past couple of years we have seen a change in attitude as the market has come to realisation that stability is important."

The reopening of Global Advanced Metals’ Wodgina tantalum mine and Greenbushes processing plant in Western Australia poses a limited threat to the strength of prices, market participants agree.
The long-expected restart of the projects, which supplied 30% of the world’s tantalum in their most recent year of production, will hold back the pace of price increases but will not flood the market with new material or drag prices back to levels seen two years ago, GAM ceo Bryan Ellis told MB.
“We’re only coming back with 700,000 lb, compared with the 1.4 million capacity; we think it’s the right number. My view is it will certainly calm the market; I think it will likely put a ceiling on things for a while as people start recasting their supply and demand figures,” Ellis told MB.
A further 200,000 lb over five years will be bought by GAM from fellow Australian miner Galaxy Resources.

Passive component maker Holy Stone has revealed that its production of tantalum capacitors will reach 50 million units a month in 2011 compared to 30 million units at the end of 2010 as it continues to transfer the tantalum capacitor production lines it purchased from Hitachi Chemical Electronics (HKE) back to its production base in Yilan, northeastern Taiwan.
Based on its capacity expansion projects, Holy Stone expects its capex spending to reach NT$100 million (US$3.43 million) in 2011.
Client's verification process for switching tantalum capacitors from HKE to Holy Stone was almost complete in the fourth quarter of 2010 and this will help accelerate shipments in 2011, Holy Stone said.
Sales of tantalum capacitors currently contribute 4% to Holy Stone's total revenues, noted the company, adding that increasing shipments of tantalum capacitors will also help improve its gross margin.

Shipment of Tantalum
31 January 2011
Noventa (AIM: NVTA, TSX: NTA), the Mozambican miner and producer of tantalum concentrate, is pleased to announce the successful completion of its proving programme of tantalum concentrate shipments.
The sixth and final proving shipment will be dispatched from the port of Nacala in Mozambique (circa 600km and 6.5 hours from the Marropino mine) to the USA on or around 3 February 2011. All future shipments are expected to be at production scale following the introduction of the interim comminution circuit (see the previous announcement of 15 December 2010) that is expected to be installed ahead of schedule during February 2011.
Prior to April 2009, shipments made their way by road to Walvis Bay in Namibia (circa 3,900km and 7-10 days from the Marropino mine) and were subject to frequently unreliable shipping movements that added delay and cost to the delivery; the Company set out to use Mozambique's small but modern and efficient ports to reduce the shipping time.
The proving programme was designed to test shipping and export processes, to examine the main and alternative shipping routes and to confirm that the Company had the appropriate approvals and licences to ship its material to its customers efficiently, and within the appropriate laws and regulations of the countries through which the shipment passes. Following successful completion of this programme, the Company now has a tested, proven and robust shipping process and procedure.
Chairman Eric Kohn commented: "Shipping tantalum concentrate from the Company's operational mine at Marropino to its clients' processing plants around the world is necessarily complex. Given, the nature of the material and the need to comply with a host of complicated procedures, we are extremely pleased to have stress tested and finalised a process of tantalum concentrate shipment that will allow us to swiftly and economically deliver our product to consumers as we look to ramp up our production in the near future" .

Noventa (AIM: NVTA) has terminated the agreement for the sale of morganite produced by the Marropino mine in Mozambique with Miranda Gems Hong Kong Ltd, while reaching another offtake agreement with another party.
The deal is for the acquisition of the morganite in various states of treatment to produce the finished gem stones, which were on consignment to Miranda, for US$1 million.
“We are pleased to have realised the additional funds which will be used in restarting the Marropino Mine and provide additional working capital,” said chairman of Noventa Eric Kohn.
Marropino was placed on care and maintenance in May 2008. In October 2009, Noventa declared it was mulling all options regarding the asset, including reopening the mine with modifications to existing plant and mine plan, a new fixed plant with a capacity of 450,000 pounds of tantalum per annum, three modular plants with annual producing capacities of 150,000 pounds, outsourcing processing to a third party and a trade sale.
Its favoured option was to reopen Marropino due to the positive demand outlook for tantalum.
The company is looking to commence production from the mine in March this year.

Tantalite prices have stabilised over the Chinese New Year holidays, with the market mulling over news of production restarting in Australia and potential restart of concentrate shipments from the Democratic Republic of Congo. Demand and prices for tantalum metal are also said to be holding steady at present, however opinion is divided on whether there is still upward potential in the market, or whether it will now backtrack from its peak.
The latest tender for 29.09 tonnes of tantalum and niobium concentrate from Ethiopian producer EMDSC was concluded this week at $120.52/lb...
