EBL launches Bangladesh’s first AI-based banking chatbot Bank Technology Solutions 1/2/18
Eastern Bank Ltd (EBL) has become the first bank in Bangladesh to launch an artificial intelligence (AI) based chatbot.
EBL’s Digital Interactive Agent (DIA) will communicate with customers via Facebook Messenger, providing information about their accounts, credit and prepaid cards, and general information about EBL’s products and services.
EBL says the chatbot will also soon be available on Twitter and Viber.
The bank describes the development as a “major leap” in its digitalisation efforts. Ali Reza Iftekhar, EBL’s managing director, says the bank “always strives to innovate” and is on a mission “to make everyone’s banking transaction simple”.
EBL was established in 1992. It has around 60 branches across Bangladesh and 3,000 employees. It offers retail and corporate banking, asset management and equity brokerage.

“Europe has always been a core market for Rakuten. We’ve been active in the region for nearly a decade,” explains Toby Otsuka, CEO of Rakuten Europe.
Can you give us an overview of Rakuten’s current position in Europe?
Europe has always been a core market for Rakuten. We’ve been active in the region for nearly a decade. More than 15 Rakuten companies are based here, including PriceMinister-Rakuten, Rakuten.de, Rakuten TV, Rakuten Viber and Rakuten Marketing – and some of our biggest investments, including Glovo, Cabify and Currency Cloud, have been made in Europe.
We have a long history – but it’s only since we started to unify our brands around the Rakuten name, and launched our partnership with FC Barcelona last year, that people really started to recognize the extent of our presence and our commitment to the region.

E-commerce giant Rakuten Inc. is teaming up with global online travel agent Booking.com as it prepares to take on Airbnb Inc. in the increasingly competitive market for private short-term minpaku lodging services.
Rakuten Lifull Stay Inc., a Rakuten group company that provides vacation rental services, said Monday it reached an agreement that will see it list properties on its tentatively titled Vacation Stay service, available on Booking.com.
The firm plans to launch the service in June, when a new law that legalizes home rentals in Japan will take effect.
The company has reached similar agreements with Expedia Inc.’s vacation rental site, HomeAway, Taiwan’s AsiaYo and China’s Tujia. Late last month it launched Rakuten Stay, a comprehensive property management service for landlords looking to rent space to travelers.
