Rakuten wesentlich besser als Rocket
Since its inception, Symphony, which has 3,500 employees worldwide, has generated revenues of $315 million and bookings of $3.1 billion. Much of that will come from 1&1 in Germany, where Symphony plans, builds and will manage the German operator’s greenfield, Open RAN-based 5G network.
Rakuten says Symphony had 14 commercial customers at the end of September and another 12 engagements on the verge of monetization: Tareq Amin, who is CEO of both Rakuten Mobile and Rakuten Symphony, recently noted that Symphony is on the verge of an extensive deal with a brownfield customer (an existing mobile operator adding Open RAN to its existing infrastructure – no names were mentioned, but Amin recently discussed with TelecomTV what appeared to be a imminent opportunity with Canada’s Telus).
In total, Symphony claims to have 69 potential customers in its pipeline in addition to the 14 it already has, and aims to generate $1 billion in revenue between now and the end of 2023.

But Rakuten Medical’s Alluminox platform, an investigational photoimmunotherapy technology that uses light to help kill targeted cells, is raising hopes for cancer treatment, particularly in head and neck cancer, the seventh most common type of cancer worldwide. Roughly a quarter of all these cases are in India, where Rakuten Medical is working hard on the development of the new treatment.
To bring investigational treatments based on the Alluminox platform to India, Rakuten Medical established Rakuten Medical Private Limited (Rakuten Medical India) in Mumbai earlier this year. Head and neck cancer is very common in India, constituting 26% of all head and neck cancer worldwide and 30% of all cancers in India.
Rakuten Medical’s investigational Alluminox treatment consists of drug and device components. Patients are first administered a drug that binds a dye molecule to the targeted cells over time. Non-thermal light is then applied. The light is applied directly to tumors that are close to the surface of the skin, but for deeper tumors, other devices can be used to deliver the light. There are investigational studies that have shown that the illumination causes biophysical processes on the tumor cell surface, leading to the death of the tumor cells with minimal effects on the surrounding tissue.
There are early clinical studies that indicate that this technology has the potential not only to kill cancer cells rapidly but also to boost immunity. Based on its unique mechanism of action, and potential to treat various cancers, Rakuten Medical hopes the therapy may one day be regarded as the fifth pillar of weapons against cancer alongside surgery, chemotherapy, radiation and immunotherapy. A therapy based on the Alluminox platform has been approved and is already commercialized in Japan. Rakuten Medical is working to gain approval for therapies based on Alluminox in other markets as well.

DEA operates the PlayMining GameFi platform, which features a catalogue of P2E NFT games, including Job Tribes, Cookin' Burger, and Menya Dragon Ramen
Dec. 12, 2022 - PRLog -- Singapore-based global Digital Entertainment Asset (DEA), a Web3 entertainment company, has signed a memorandum of understanding with Rakuten Group for a collaborative partnership in the Web3 domain.
The partnership will see DEA and Rakuten collaborate on potential synergies in their respective businesses to enhance the value of their services further.
As part of the deal, Rakuten's corporate VC arm Rakuten Capital will also make a minority investment in DEA by subscribing to share acquisition rights.
DEA operates the PlayMining GameFi platform, which features a catalogue of play-to-earn (P2E) NFT games, including Job Tribes, Cookin' Burger, Menya Dragon Ramen and the recently launched Graffiti Racer.
The platform has an NFT marketplace featuring hot content from household names among Japanese anime and video game fans and a metaverse initiative under development.
DEA also has its token DEAPcoin ($DEP), a P2E token approved by Japan's Financial Service Agency. By having an NFT market, a token and a GameFi and metaverse platform in one place, PlayMining can offer IP monetisation opportunities to third-company game studio partners.
"Our vision for DEA is to become the world's top Web3 entertainment company. Our agreement with Rakuten will go a long way towards helping us work toward this goal by increasing adoption of PlayandEarn gaming," said DEA's Co-Founder and co-CEO Kozo Yamada.

Heading into the fourth quarter, things are looking up on the mobile side – management says signups outpaced cancellations in November, potentially signaling a turnaround in subscriber additions. As all customers will also be billed from November onwards, achieving further ARPU gains (vs. JPY 2.6k ARPU in mobile business released in September) will be key to achieving operational profitability. Also, the decline in roaming costs, base station installation and associated maintenance costs will benefit margins as 4G network rollout completes in FY23 with ~60,000 base stations deployed (vs. ~50,000 current). However, pending better visibility of a reversal in mobile, I would be cautious about guaranteeing a fundamental bounce for the foreseeable future.
Looking beyond the near term, Rakuten continues to aim to break even for its mobile business in one month by the end of 2023. Meanwhile, operational trends are forecast to improve as early as H1 2023 due to cost cutting and the launch of new business services.
