China: 10 million HIV infections by 2010?

China's government has confirmed the prediction of the Joint United Nations Program on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) that the country could have 10 million HIV-positive people by 2010, unless effective action is taken immediately.

"If the preventive measures are slack, the number of people infected by HIV could reach 10 million by 2010," Dai Zhicheng, director of the Ministry of Health's Committee of AIDS Experts, told the Xinhua Daily Telegraph.

Dai added that the number of HIV-positive people "could be kept under" 1.5 million with the right action and sufficient funds.

UNAIDS has repeatedly warned China of its growing HIV epidemic.

"The general situation with China is there's an abundance of migrants and sex workers and these situations create vulnerability," Asif Husain-Naviatti, a liaison officer for UNAIDS, told GAY.COM.

While the Chinese government has said that 840,000 people are living with the disease in the country, international experts believe the actual number of HIV-positive people in China is between 1 million to 1.5 million.

China's efforts to fight HIV include a campaign to promote condom use, safe injection practices and care for AIDS patients.

The Chinese government is offering no-cost check-ups and medical treatment for HIV-positive people, as well as no-cost education for their children.

In September, China's vice health minister, Wang Longde, said the Chinese government must admit the existence of men who have sex with men in its effort to fight the pandemic.

Longde's warning was supported by research from the Chinese Centre for Disease Control and Prevention, warning that more than 80 percent of Chinese men who have sex with men erroneously believe they are safe from HIV/AIDS.

Rates of infections in Russia, China and India will reach African levels soon -- and with it bring massive numbers of dead -- if those states don't change their attitudes to the disease.

Botswana, the northern neighbor of the Republic South Africa, suffers from hospices that are overwhelmed, endless rows of corpses, full cemeteries and an average life expectancy of 40. AIDS experts are convinced that this scenario will be repeated in Asia as well.

The impact of the disease on a country's economy is well reflected by African states like Zambia, Malawi, Burkina Faso and Botswana. Though politically stable, there are not enough healthy workers in the fields, and millions of children are becoming orphans. HIV/AIDS destroys a country's economy in the same way it destroys a human's immune system.

Meanwhile, Western Europe remains complacent and self-satisfied due to its years of education campaigns and developed distribution system for AIDS medication. But HIV/AIDS is on its way for a big comeback.

Infection rates in Germany have increased for the first time since the early 1990s."

Village doctors fill breach in HIV control

Villages are where 70 per cent of China's HIV and AIDS cases are found, so it's little wonder that a pilot project to fight the epidemic has its roots in rural areas of Southwest China's Yunnan Province.

Started by the local governments in Dehong Dai and Jingpo Autonomous Prefecture in the province in May, the project has made progress despite challenges.

In five villages in Longchuan and Yingjiang counties, a comprehensive prevention-and-treatment programme is in place which includes public education, HIV testing and consultation, high-risk activity intervention, treatment and social projects.

Village doctors typically farmers who are given basic training in healthcare and are paid a nominal sum have become the main force behind the project, said Teng Yun, director of the HIV/AIDS Control Centre in the prefecture.

In the two counties, which border Myanmar, about 80 per cent of the HIV/AIDS victims were infected after using contaminated hypodermic needles while taking drugs.

Since 1989, when the first case was found among drug abusers in Longchuan, the virus has spread from seven villages to 214, infecting 1,865 people. Therefore, the government has taken a new approach by sending health workers to the villages, instead of being based in counties or towns.

In the spring of 2003, the central government launched a nationwide campaign for comprehensive control in dozens of counties where the epidemic was considered serious.

Free services, such as testing for HIV, treatment and education, are provided.

"However, our workers and doctors, who are based in the town centres, are too far away from the rural sufferers," said Mei Hongying, director of the Longchuan HIV/AIDS Control Centre.

"The (Yunnan) project lets village doctors play a vital role in helping the villagers fight against the deadly virus," Mei said.

In the past two months, local doctors gave free HIV tests to people aged 15-60 in the two pilot villages in Longchuan.

They are trained in intervention work, such as handing out condoms and instructing patients how to take medication correctly, Mei said.

"We can do it because we are their neighbours, familiar with all their problems," said Yin Zuluan, a 34-year-old village doctor of Guangsong village. "The villagers trust me."

However, the pilot project has also encountered problems.

For instance, most village doctors each get a salary of less than 100 yuan (US$12) a month, Mei said, and many of them do not have a chance to receive advanced training.

Generally there are only one or two doctors per village.

"It is very hard for me to provide follow-up service and do intervention work among all the families, many of whom live far in the mountains," said Luo Lu, a village doctor in Longchuan.

"Many poor villagers," Yin added, "cannot afford the bus fare for the trip."

Realizing this factor, Calypte has worked hard to develop production plants in Asia, with the Thailand plant furnishing the African market during the past few months. Sales are expected to ramp in the African countries.

It has acquired another plant in China, where the HIV epidemic is expected to become a national crisis.

Their distribution network, internationally, has been developed the past few months and within a year, the company expects sales that will hopefully present a "break even" scenario.

The CEO has announced there is sufficient funding for the next several quarters and anticipates there will be sufficient funding to the "break even" point.

The sales of the BED incidence test are also ramping. These, could be sold in conjunction with the Calypte rapid blood test, whereupon the testing for both the incidence to determine population studies as well as the actual diagnosis of HIV could be done at the same time.

The oral saliva test with his one hundred percent accuracy is the perfect resolution to the problems faced in the field in Africa, China and other third world countries and will diminish the risk to health care workers as well as alleviate difficulties with hazardous waste disposal.

The markets Calypte is targeting is where the need is for HIV testing. The world has begged for an inexpensive, effective, quality product. Calypte is the only company that has it.

Nach dem CC sind wir alle doch etwas schlauer geworden was Caly angeht, nun ja gut meine so genannten prognosen haben bis jetzt nicht eingeschlagen, was den Kurs angeht aber so ist nunmal die Boerse...

Die Erwartungen der Anleger ist begrenzt, wohl sogar fixiert auf Absätze und Zulassung in China..

Wie viele hier investierten es auch wissen, steckt viel mehr hinter diesem Unternehmen..
Das eine werden die Anleger wohl dieses Jahr noch bekommen und das andere was Absätze angeht wohl kurz danach....

Geschlossene Anstalt

Während eines Besuches in einer geschlossenen Anstalt fragt ein Besucher
den Direktor, nach welchen Kriterien entschieden wird, ob jemand
eingeliefert werden muss oder nicht.

Der Direktor sagt: "Nun, wir füllen eine Badewanne, geben dem Kandidaten
einen Teelöffel, eine Tasse und einen Eimer und bitten ihn, die
Badewanne auszuleeren.

Der Besucher: "Ah, ich verstehe, und ein normaler Mensch würde den Eimer
nehmen, damit es schneller geht, ja?"

Direktor: "Nein, ein normaler Mensch würde den Stöpsel ziehen.....
.....wünschen Sie ein Zimmer mit oder ohne Balkon??"
