MOSCOW. Dec 19 (Interfax) - Russian potash-producer Uralkali (MOEX: URKA) is looking to begin negotiations with India over a new contract to supply the product in April or May of next year, the company's director for marketing and sales, Oleg Petrov, said during a conference call.
Petrov predicted that India will import 3.5-4 million tonnes of potash in 2014 versus 3-3.2 million tonnes in 2013.
Uralkali plans to secure a contract with China before this year ends or early next year. "As soon as we conclude the contract with China, markets will rapidly reset," he said.
Expectations are that warehouse inventory in China will be down to 3.5 million tonnes by the end of this year.

MOSCOW--Russian potash giant OAO Uralkali (URKA.RS) named a new chief executive Monday, replacing its jailed former CEO with a top manager from Uralchem, whose owners recently bought a large stake in the fertilizer company.
Dmitry Osipov, 47, will take over as CEO on Tuesday, replacing Vladislav Baumgertner who has been detained since August after being arrested in Belarus for his role in breaking up a trading partnership between Uralkali and state-run potash miner Belaruskali.

December 23, 2013 (Source: The Moscow Times) – Tycoon-turned-politician Mikhail Prokhorov and a fellow businessman have taken control of a 47 percent stake in potash firm Uralkali and plan to appoint a new CEO who could revive a partnership with Belarus, a source close to the matter said...
“They will try to solve the conflict now,” a source, familiar with new shareholders’ plans said Friday...
“Baumgertner had to go,” said Bruce Bower, a partner at Moscow hedge fund Verno Capital, adding the governments of both Russia and Belarus were unhappy with him as Uralkali had damaged the bilateral relationship between them...
Reviving the potash alliance could help Belarus, but experts say industry overcapacity may make a deal hard to achieve.
“A negotiation process would not be fast,” said sector analyst Boris Krasnojenov of Renaissance Capital in Moscow.
“There are many points that could be discussed. Plus, if we move back to a ‘price over volume’ strategy, someone would have to slash production, and Uralkali is unlikely to be interested in doing it,” Krasnojenov said...
It remains unclear when talks with Lukashenko might start and whether the new CEO appointment would also mean changes in Uralkali’s sales department, currently headed by Oleg Petrov.

(Reuters) - Russia will provide Belarus with up to $2 billion in additional loans in 2014, Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Wednesday, to shore-up the neighboring country's stuttering growth.
Belarus, Russia's staunchest ally among the former Soviet republics, was forced to devalue its rouble by 65 percent against the dollar in 2011 to curb a current account deficit brought on by excessive government spending.
"The Russian government has decided to help our colleagues, in connection with what is happening with the global markets, and provide Belarus with additional loans of up to $2 billion," Putin said at a press conference in the Kremlin after meeting his Belarussian counterpart Alexander Lukashenko.
The financial aid follows a $3 billion loan Belarus secured from a Russian-led bailout fund in June 2011 to help it avoid economic chaos, stabilize its rouble currency and tame runaway inflation.
"I am very grateful to you, that you decided today to support the Belarus economy in these difficult times," said Lukashenko.
Belarus and Russia are seeking to patch up trade ties after a row over the arrest of the head of Russian potash maker Uralkali (URKA.MM) in Minsk in August which followed Uralkali pulling out of a sales venture with Belarus.
A change in shareholding at Uralkali has since raised speculation that the two countries could revive the partnership.
Belarus is facing peak payments on its international debt - which stands at $12 billion - in 2013-2014, while its economic growth has slowed.
In a press release last week, the IMF said Belarus' outlook is for continued slow growth, reaching only 1.1 percent year-on-year in the first nine months of 2013.
Putin also last week offered Ukraine a $15 billion lifeline, along with a big cut in the price Kiev pays for vital Russian gas supplies, as he tries to persuade Russia's Slavic neighbor to join a customs union of ex-Soviet republics.

MINSK, 27 December (BelTA) – New shareholders of Russia"s Uralkali are ready to resume cooperation with Belaruskali, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Russian Federation to Belarus Alexander Surikov said at a press conference on 27 December, BelTA has learnt.
The diplomat believes that Belarus and Russia will be able to resume cooperation in the potash industry. "The Russian embassy commented on the matter some time ago. We were very sorry about the breach of relations between the two potash companies. We believed that the Russian company acted hastily and miscounted," the Russian Ambassador said.
The diplomat noted that Uralkali now has a new majority shareholder and minority shareholders. "As far as I know, they are willing to resume relations with Belaruskali. This would be the right thing to do, because this will mean a more powerful conglomerate on the international market, greater profits for the two companies, and better living conditions of people living in the towns where these companies are located," Alexander Surikov said.
"This is absolutely right. We believe that the cooperation should be resumed. The companies need to come up with reasonable terms of joint sale of their products. And this is likely to be done," the ambassador added.

The new owners of Russian potash producer Uralkali are to resume cooperation with Belaruskali of Belarus, which means the cartel that used to control about 40 percent of world potash exports will be back.
"After the change of owners - shareholders were replaced by Uralchem [the world's second largest ammonium nitrate producer] and interests of Prokhorov [Russian tycoon-turned-politician] - Uralkali is ready to restore cooperation with Belaruskali," the Russian ambassador to Belarus Alexander Surikov told a news conference on Friday.
The Russian side "acted thoughtlessly and did not calculate all the consequences" from the collapse of the potash cartel, but "both sides were to blame," he said.
"The joint marketing of potash fertilisers should be restored. Most probably this would happen," Surikov said, adding that this would be advantageous for both sides...

Despair not, potash investors, producers and explorers: the trend is your friend.
The year 2013 was not a good one for the potash story. Apart from the Belarus-Uralkali stoush, price falls put pressure on producers and drained investor enthusiasm from potash explorers. But the demand story remains intact: the forces working for increased potash demand are inexorable. Not only is the world‘s population continuing to climb, but an increasing number of people can afford better food.
Less land, fewer farmers and millions (hundreds of millions) more city dwellers mean only one thing: the need for higher crop yields, hence more fertilizer...
